A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE
ESTABLISHMENT OF A SISTER CITY RELATIONSHIP WITH
THE CITY OF TAORMINA, ITALY; AUTHORIZING THE CITY
MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE
THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, sister city relationships are developed to increase global cooperation at the
municipal level, promoting cultural understanding and stimulating economic development; and
WHEREAS, Sister Cities International based in Washington, D.C., is the organization that
formally recognizes sister city relationships worldwide; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to enter into a sister city relationship with
Taormina, Italy, a coastal resort community similar to Sunny Isles Beach, and Taormina, Italy has
expressed an interest in twinning with the City of Sunny Isles Beach.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Establishment of a Sister City Relationship. The City Commission hereby authorizes
the establishment of a sister city relationship with the City of Taormina, Italy.
Section 2. Authority of the City Manager. The City Commission hereby authorizes the City
Manager to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution.
Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption
PASSED and ADOPTED on this 10th day of May 2012.

Sister City Relationship with Taormina, Italy
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Commission approve the attached resolution to support a
Sister Cities International relationship with Taormina, Italy.
REASONS:
Taormina, Italy is a small coastal city in Sicily that shares the same world class city style
as Sunny Isles Beach. Through the hard work and determination of Elena Baranoff, the
City's Ambassador, City Officials met with delegates from Taormina to exchange
cultural, educational and professional ideals and missions. Both cities agree that there are
many similarities between the two cities and there is a great deal more that can be shared
and learned by continuing this relationship.
It is the desire of both communities to formalize this relationship through Sister Cities
International.
