MTISTA & ASSOCIATES QUALIFICATIONS i F1 6 QUALIFICATIONS EXPLANATION Mr. Batista is indeed a rare breed. Having held top management positions in world -class construction and development companies such as Turner Construction and The Opus Corporation, Greg has also managed to make a name for himself in the design and engineering industry in Florida by acting as the hands -on Engineer of Record on hundreds of projects and of large -scale commercial and residential projects throughout the US and Puerto Rico. Mr. Batista's and his company, G. Batista & Associates contains in -house structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering as well as Construction Management capabilities (see www.gbanda.com). His clients include the likes of The City of North Miami Beach, Broward County, The City of Miami Beach, The Seminole Tribe of Florida, Dorsky Hodgson and Partners, Cubellis, Centerline Homes, Ashbritt, The Merlin Law Group, among many others. He has been a licensed PE for 21 years (14 in Florida) and a licensed General Contractor in Florida for over 14 years. Additionally, this breadth of knowledge in both Design and Construction is indispensible for performing and generating exceptional reports for construction /design- related issues and serving as a sought -after expert witness in large claims. This exceptional breadth of knowledge rarely found in one individual is the reason behind Mr. Batista's success in that it allows him to provide consistent and sound consulting advice in construction and engineering. Mr. Batista strongly believes that all engineers should have a minimum of 5 years in direct construction experience so engineers can possess that insight that so many engineers lack. ITEM -BY -ITEM DISCLOSURE AND HIGHLIGHTS OF QUALIFICATIONS Mr. Batista has been the Structural Engineer of Record, in the last 10 Years alone, of over 1,000 projects with an overall estimated construction cost of over $300 million. ➢ Licensed Professional Engineer for 21 years specializing in Structural Engineering and MEP Engineering for Structures. ➢ Licensed Professional Engineer in Florida ( #52349) for 14 year's ➢ Mr. Batista has been in business performing MEP Engineering since the year 2000 (12 years). ➢ Professional Engineer licensed in Florida, Texas, and Puerto Rico CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH RFQ No. 12 -04 -01 I G. BATISTA & A OC ATES APPROACH METHODOLOGY 14@ Our Approach and methodology to performing our engineering tasks revolve around what we call the / fthl "Method Sphere ". This is a STRATEGY methodology and approach that we are proud to have developed ourselves and is at the core of how we approach each project from inception through construction completion. What on the surface may look like a simple step -by -step procedure is actually a structured thought process where these steps actually overlap and work symbiotically to form a way of thinking which ultimately embodies our design philosophy as a whole. 4 Everything begins with the "Strategy" noted at the top of the sphere. This is where everything begins and where brainstorming takes place. Proper strategizing ensures that all the proper elements of the f design are incorporated from implementing sound engineering judgment to the owner's input. The strategizing also involves performing a charette, developing the methodology of design, use of personnel and resources, and a study of time constraints and budgets, among many others. Like an ecosystem, Buildings and Structures are complex environments with hundreds of related systems. In order to successfully design and build a project, regardless of size, this proposed ecosystem must be meticulously studied, planned, and designed to up front with the goal of minimizing problems at the back end. Using our multi- dimensional approach, our engineers and project managers are able to ensure engineering projects are delivered on time, within budget and meeting the owner's exact requirements. We achieve success for our clients as a result of our experience and proven methods for strategizing, designing, and ultimately providing a quality - controlled design. CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH RFQ No. 12 -04 -01 1"] [A- ]G.BxnsTA & ASSC CIATES DESIGN 15 OO The next step in our methodology is the actual design which includes the elements reviewed and developed during the initial strategizing. This step is the most technical since it involves the maximum use of our engineering skills and the use of our cutting edge tools for an optimal design The entire process of MEP planning and design requires not only imagination and conceptual thinking but also sound knowledge of practical aspects, such as recent design codes and statutes, backed up by ample experience, intuition and engineering judgment. It is emphasized that any structure to be constructed must satisfy the need for efficiency for which it is intended and shall be durable for its desired life span. Thus, the MEP design of any structure is categorized into following two main types: 1. Functional design 2. MEP design l FUNCTIONAL DESIGN: The most important function of the MEP design is to support the use of the structure for its intended use. Depending on the structures use, the MEP design will vary significantly. This is why it is extremely important during the Strategy phase to define in detail the functions and use of each component of the proposed facility. i MEP DESIGN: Once the functions have been properly defined, then it is up to the professional to properly engineer the facility to support the use. The process of the Mechanical/Plumbing _Engineering involves the following stages: 1. Study the architectural plans in order to obtain the necessary data to provide the Load Calculations. The engineer must have received feedback from the owner as to his specific requirements for environmental comfort or even for unique temperature requirements for special equipment. 2. Institute energy saving measures in the design. 3. Coordinate with other design professionals for conflicts. 4. Specify equipment and materials that are within the owner's budgetary constraints. 5. Detail, drawings and preparation of construction documents. 6. Provide Quality Control and corrections as may be needed. CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH RFQ No. 12 -04 -01 W&ASSOCLAM G. BATISTA The process of the Electrical Engineering involves the following stages: 16@ 1. Study the architectural plans in order to obtain the necessary data to provide the Total Electrical Load Calculations. The engineer must have received feedback from the owner as to his specific requirements for equipment, lighting, working areas, and any special emergency power generation requirements among others. 2. Institute energy saving measures in the design. 3. Coordinate with other design professionals for conflicts. 4. Specify materials that are within the owner's budgetary constraints. 5. Detail, drawings and preparation of construction documents. 6. Provide Quality Control and corrections as may be needed. OPTIMIZE Any engineer can put a design on paper. It is an entirely different set of technical skills to make this [ design one that is practical, useful for its intended purposes and cost - effective. During the design l phase, we strive to optimize our designs. Typical engineering systems are described by very large numbers of variables, and it is the designer's task to specify appropriate values for these variables. Skilled designers utilize their knowledge, experience, and judgment to specify these variables and design effective engineered systems. Because of the size and complexity of the typical design task, however, even the most skilled designers are unable to take into account all of the variables simultaneously. Design optimization is the application of techniques to engineering systems to assist the designers in improving the system's performance, reliability, and /or cost. Optimization methodologies can be applied during the design development stage to ensure that the finished design will have the high performance, high reliability, and /or low cost. Alternatively, optimization methods can be applied to existing designs to identify potential design improvements. At G. Batista & Associates, we are dedicated to providing our customers with the tools and knowledge required to generate practical designs that are useful in the real world. Greg Batista's personnel have extensive experience in applying optimization methodologies to j improve designs. MIGRATE "Migrate" represents the all- important task of successfully transferring the design from the engineering office to the construction field and ultimately a finished product. "Migration" is the -J CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH RFQ No. 12 -04 -01 G. BATISTA R&ASSOCIATES 17@ process whereby we support the contractor in the proper execution of the project from start to finish. These items are: 1. Providing the client /contractor with a full set of documents as agreed with transmittals. 2. Coordinating and instituting the RFI system with the contractor and client. 3. Coordinating and instituting a submittal and shop drawing submission and approval process. 4. Coordinating site visits and inspections with the client /contractor. 5. Coordination for attendance of construction weekly meetings (if required by client or contractor). 6. "Migration" also includes successfully closing out the project at the time of construction completion. These items include: a. Oversee final inspections b. Approval of close -out documents such as warranties and manuals of operation. c. Assist the client and contractor with obtaining the Certificate of Occupancy if applicable. d. Coordinate with the contractor in order to provide the required as- builts. e. Provide other assistance to the contractor as may be needed. BUILD "Build" is the only process that we have no control over but have included it in the "Method Sphere" as the ultimate last step in the standard progression of the design process. OVERALL ORGANIZATION TO COMPLETING PROJECTS Greg Batista, PE, CGC, LEED AP, CEM is the engineer that is in responsible charge of all the designs and projects that he and his company perform whether it's an inspection, a Structural or MEP design. Our success, even during these hard economic times, has been mostly due to the non - compromising implementation of our afore - mentioned "Method Sphere" tactic for completing our engineering tasks. The overall organization that is employed to attack a given engineering task revolves around the first step which is the "Strategy ". It is during this initial and critical phase that we -_ assess the scope of work and apply the appropriate resources - for its successful and timely completion. Through the years, Mr. Batista has been able to amass a pool of talent that are both full -time employees as well as hired consultants. CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH RFQ No. 12 -04 -01 G. BA71STA is OO Whatever the project may be, Mr. Batista will always remain at the main point of contact and will be intimately involved in all the aspects of the project even if he assigns one of his Project Managers to some of the minor tasks. ABILITY TO MEET THE DESIRED TIMELINES AND DEADLINES We do not know of any company that will employ a losing marketing strategy of advertising their inability to meet deadlines. But as a licensed, successful and seasoned General Contractor, Mr. Batista knows first -hand the importance of "doing what you say you are going to do ". Even through these hard economic times, Mr. Batista is a continually sought -after professional due to his unblemished reputation as delivering on his promises. Those that do not, simply wither away in this A /E /C industry, where those that survive, are professionals that consistently provide cost - effective, timely and quality services. The ability to meet timelines and deadlines has a direct correlation to the availability of resources to employ to the given task. Upon embarking on the "Strategy" we assess the amount of resources required to successfully complete the task within the time given. The resources include the amount of personnel, the time allotted to each person for each task, and also the equipment, software, and materials required. We have an ample office in Cooper City for the past 6 years with all the equipment required to conduct efficient engineering business. Additionally, Mr. Batista's employees are ready, willing and able to perform and support Mr. Batista in his duties, and our extensive network of hired and seasoned consultants are always at hand to supplement our forces when time constraints require it. Individual Strengths in Particular Projects: COMMUNITY CENTERS Greg Batista has extensive experience in the planning and designing of community and residential centers. Mr. Batista has worked with owners and developers such as Centerline Homes to provide design and engineering services for clubhouses for their residential developments. We have also performed interior upgrades and renovations for other community facilities. The highlight of our efforts with respects to the design of a community center is the Brighton Elder Care Facility for the Seminole Tribe of Florida performing as the Engineer of Record for the structural and also the Engineer of Record for the mechanical, electrical, fire alarm, fire sprinkler, and plumbing design. Mr. Batista was the designer of record for this 23,000 square foot facility which boasted a 1,700 sf CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH RFQ No. 12 -04 -01 C G. Batista & Associates. Last year Mr. Batista performed a design - build of a 23,000 square foot conversion of office spaces to a beauty school which includes classrooms, beauty salons, dentistry, and laboratories here in Lauderhill, Florida. I was the owner's representative for this project for the International School of Health and Beauty. Mr. Batista was both the designer of record for the entire design which included all the structure and the mechanical, electrical and plumbing which were basically done from scratch since the entire area was demolished. Having Mr. Batista also as the General Contractor for this project was also of immense help since the completion of the project was done in a mere 16 weeks. This was important to us since we needed to open for business quickly. Mr. Batista's exceptional understanding of the design, engineering and construction of a difficult and complex job such as this, was instrumental in its success and timely completion. 1 If you should have any questions, please call me. BA71STA & ASSOCIATES APPROACH METHODOLOGY 14O Our Approach and methodology to performing our engineering tasks revolve around what we call the "Method Sphere ". Everything begins with the "Strategy" noted at the top of the sphere. This is where everything begins and where brainstorming takes place. Proper strategizing ensures that all the proper elements of the design are incorporated from implementing sound engineering judgment to the owner's input. Using our multi - dimensional approach, our engineers and project managers are able to ensure engineering projects are delivered on time, within budget and meeting the owner's exact requirements. We achieve success for our clients as a result of our experience and proven methods for strategizing, designing, and ultimately providing a quality - controlled design. CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH RFQ No. 12 -04 -01 rl I MG. BATISTA DESIGN 150 The next step in our methodology is the actual design which includes the elements reviewed and developed during the initial strategizing. This step is the most technical since it involves the maximum use of our engineering skills and the use of our cutting edge tools for an optimal design The entire process of structural planning and design requires not only imagination and conceptual thinking but also sound knowledge of practical aspects, such as recent design codes and statutes, backed up by ample experience, intuition and engineering judgment. It is emphasized that any structure to be constructed must satisfy the need for efficiency for which it is intended and shall be durable for its desired life span. Thus, the design of any structure is categorized into following two main types: 1. Functional design 2. Structural design FUNCTIONAL DESIGN: The structure to be constructed should primarily serve the basic purpose for which it is to be used and must have a pleasing look. The building should provide a pleasing environment inside as well as outside. Therefore, the functional planning of a structure must take into account the proper arrangements of the structural elements to satisfy the need of the client, good ventilation, lighting, acoustics, and unobstructed view in the case of inhabited spaces. STRUCTURAL DESIGN: Once the form of the structure is selected, the structural design process starts. Structural design is an art and science of understanding the behavior of structural members ' subjected to loads and designing them with economy and elegance to give a safe, serviceable and durable structure. Stages of Structural Design - The process of structural design involves the following stages: 1. Structural planning. 2. Action of forces and computation of loads. 3. Methods of analysis. 4. Member design. 5. Detailing, Drawing and Preparation of schedules. CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH RFQ No. 12 -04 -01 1 G. BATISTA & ASSOCIATES FMVI r OPTIMIZE Any engineer can put a design on paper. It is an entirely different set of technical skills to make this design one that is practical, useful for its intended purposes and cost - effective. During the design phase, we strive to optimize our designs. Typical engineering systems are described by very large numbers of variables, and it is the designer's task to specify appropriate values for these variables. Skilled designers utilize their knowledge, experience, and judgment to specify these variables and design effective engineered systems. Because of the size and complexity of the typical. design task, however, even the most skilled designers are unable to take into account all of the variables simultaneously. Design optimization is the application of techniques to engineering systems to assist the designers in improving the system's performance, reliability, and /or cost. Optimization methodologies can be applied during the design development stage to ensure that the finished design will have the high performance, high EMENEW reliability, and /or low cost. Alternatively, optimization i methods can be applied to existing designs to identify potential design improvements. At G. Batista & Associates, we are dedicated to providing our customers with the tools and knowledge required to generate practical designs that are useful in the real world. Greg Batista's personnel have extensive experience in applying optimization methodologies to improve designs. MIGRATE "Migrate" represents the all - important task of successfully transferring the design from the engineering office to the construction field and ultimately a finished product. "Migration" is the process whereby we support the contractor in the proper execution of the project from start to finish. CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH RFQ No. 12 -04 -01 G. BA -nsTA &ASSOCLAM 17d c. Our success, even during these hard economic times, has been mostly due to the non - a compromising implementation of our afore - mentioned "Method Sphere" tactic for completing our engineering tasks. The overall organization that is employed to attack a given engineering task revolves around the first step which is the "Strategy ". It is during this initial and critical phase that we assess the scope of work and apply the appropriate resources for its successful and timely completion. Through the years, Mr. Batista has been able to amass a pool of talent that are both full -time U employees as well as hired consultants. Whatever the project may be, Mr. CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH RFQ No. 12 -04 -01 G G. BATISTA & ASSOCIATES 18 0 The ability to meet timelines and deadlines has a direct correlation to the availability of resources to employ to the given task.
