A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY
ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE
ESTABLISHMENT OF A UNIQUE ZIP CODE FOR THE CITY OF SUNNY
ISLES BEACH; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL
THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION;
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach has always been desirous to obtain its own unique
zip code; and
WHEREAS, in 2007 Vice -Mayor Lewis Thaler led an effort to have the City of Sunny Isles
Beach obtain its own zip code, an effort that was rejected by the United States Postal Service; and
WHEREAS, since 2007, there have been changes to the application process and it was
thought that it was worth another attempt to acquire a unique zip code; and
WHEREAS, some of the benefits of having a unique zip code include promoting commerce
and community identity.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Support to Obtain a Unique Zip Code. The City Commission hereby supports the
establishment of a unique zip code for the City of Sunny Isles Beach.
Section 2. Authorization of City Manager. The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all
things necessary to effectuate this Agreement.
Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution will become effective upon adoption.

RE: Supporting the Establishment of a Unique Zip Code for the City of Sunny
Isles Beach
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the resolution supporting a unique zip code for the City of Sunny Isles Beach
REASONS:
In 2007 Vice -Mayor Thaler led the effort to have the City of Sunny Isles Beach be
assigned its own zip code. That effort was ultimately unsuccessful due to a rejection by
the Postal Service. There have since been changes in the application process and it was
thought that it was worth another attempt to acquire our own zip code. The effort this
time was again inspired by the Vice -Mayor and is being led by Jennifer Levin, the chair
of the Special Projects Sub - Committee of the Citizens Advisory Committee. Jennifer has
indicated that she needs a resolution of support from the City Commission to move
forward with her process.
There are many benefits that have been cited as reasons for acquiring a unique zip code
for the city. The three most prominent are to simplify commerce, improve insurance rates
and to promote community identity. Regarding commerce, items destined for addresses
in Sunny Isles Beach are sometimes misdirected to similar addresses in North Miami
Beach or Aventura because we share the same zip code. This also leads to complications
in the ordering process for many consumers in Sunny Isles Beach when they try to order
things on the telephone or online and are being told that they live in North Miami Beach.
Regarding insurance, for example homeowners insurance, rates are predicated on local
crime statistics. Unless our residents are insistent with their carriers about where they
actually live, their insurance rates are based on crime statistics that include statistics from
other communities.
