HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2012-1938RESOLUTION NO. 2012- 1 q S A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE "PRESTIGE CULTURAL SERIES AT BISCAYNE BAY CAMPUS 2012 - 2013" PROGRAM, AND AUTHORIZING A CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTION TO THE BISCAYNE BAY CAMPUS OF FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (FIU), IN THE AMOUNT OF FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($5,000.00); AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION: PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach is committed in participating and informing its residents of cultural events and activities taking place in and around our community; and WHEREAS, the Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) of Florida International University (FIU) has invited the City to become a co- partner in the FIU Prestige Cultural Series at BBC 2012 - 2013 to engage our community in outstanding cultural experiences in the educational setting of the Biscayne Bay Campus; and WHEREAS, the Prestige Cultural Series at BBC will include five events: 1) An Opera Matinee at BBC; 2) Musical Theater Scenes at Sunny Isles Beach; 3) A Piano Concert at BBC; and 4) A Gourmet Wine & Food Luncheon with FIU's Graduate String Quartet at BBC; and WHEREAS, the partnership between the City and FIU is mutually beneficial to our residents and visitors, and it can be incorporated into the City's existing Cultural Events Program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Approval of Partnership. The City Commission hereby approves the partnership between the City and Florida International University (FIU). Section 2. Authority of City Manager. The City Commission directs the City Manager to do all things necessary to effectuate this Resolution, which includes but is not limited to donating $5,000.00 to Biscayne Bay Campus of FIU for the Prestige Cultural Series at BBC 2012 - 2013. The Prestige Cultural Series will include four events: 1) An Opera Matinee 2) Musical Theater Scenes 3) Piano Concert with Students and Alumni and 4) A Gourmet Wine and Food Pairing Luncheon with FIU's Graduate String Quartet. All performances will feature the artistry of students from FIU's School of Music. Tickets to all events will be available to the public. We continue to offer quality public education to over 8,000 students, many who live within a 25 mile radius of the campus. We also have many other amenities available to our community neighbors — an extensive research library, recreation by the bay, lifelong learning classes, beautiful bike paths, and engaging lectures and speakers. We, therefore, respectfully request $5000 as a donation to support this initiative on the Biscayne Bay Campus of Florida International University. Together we will provide a much needed service to our communities — quality cultural activities and experiences at an affordable price. REASONS: In partnership with Florida International University, this opportunity provides a series of 4 culturally rich events for the community at an affordable price. The events scheduled for this year include: 1) An Opera Matinee at BBC; 2) Musical Theater Scenes at Sunny Isles Beach; 3) A Piano Concert at BBC; and 4) A Gourmet Wine & Food Luncheon with FIU's Graduate String Quartet at BBC. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The requested donation amount is an increase of $2,000 from last year to provide for a reduction in individual ticket prices to Sunny Isles Beach residents only giving our residents the added benefit of the City's participation in this program. FUNDING SOURCE: Funding is available upon approval of the budget transfer into General Fund account number 10.511.5490 - Donations.
