A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING A CONTRIBUTION
TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, IN AN AMOUNT OF
TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS ($2,000.00), TOWARD THE
SPONSORSHIP OF THE 2013 "RELAY FOR LIFE" EVENT;
AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO DO ALL THINGS
NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING
FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society is dedicated to educating our community
about early detection and prevention of cancer; and
WHEREAS, the "Relay for Life" event is the American Cancer Society's signature
activity that raises funds to support patient services, research, education, and advocacy; and
WHEREAS, the 2013 Relay for Life of Sunny Isles Beach.Golden Beach.Aventura will
take place at Heritage Park beginning on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 5:00 p.m., and ending on
Sunday,April 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.; and
WHEREAS, the City wishes to be a sponsor for the American Cancer Society, and to
make a contribution in an amount of Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00), to sponsor the Relay
for Life Event.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH,FLORIDA,AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Approval of Contribution. The City Commission hereby approves a contribution
to the American Cancer Society, in an amount of Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00), to sponsor
the 2013 "Relay for Life" Event.
Section 2. Authorization of City Manager. The City Manager is hereby authorized to do all
things necessary to effectuate this Resolution.
Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon adoption.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 15th day of November 2012.

Did you know that two-thirds of all cancer is preventable... and yet, 1.4 million Americans are
diagnosed with cancer each year? The American Cancer Society is dedicated to educating our community
about early detection and prevention of cancer. As part of our mission, we offer employers easy to use
programs, completely free-of-charge, to share our life saving educational messages with your employees and
community.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature activity that raises funds to support
patient services, research, education, and advocacy. With the help of dedicated volunteers, donors and
supporters, we have been able to strengthen our patient services by offering programs like Road to Recovery,
where we drive patients to their treatments. We continue to fund more research than ANY OTHER organization,
second only to the US government, funding 44 Nobel Prize winners and thousands of researchers who are
saving lives with their daily discoveries. The American Cancer Society continues to educate the community with
early detection and prevention programs. Our advocacy efforts are outstanding as we advocate for laws that will
assure our government continues its research &work towards a cure!
Relay For Life is a true community event where people of all ages and from all walks of life come together for a
common cause—the fight against cancer. Relay For Life is an especially wonderful event for employees
that focuses on team building and boosting morale. Food, fun, and camaraderie are all part of the Relay
For Life experience. We walk,jog or run relay style around the tracks or pathways at a community field. Friends,
local businesses, hospitals, schools, faith based organizations, corporations, and other organizations form teams
of 10-15 people. It only costs $100 to get a team started and each team member is asked to raise $100 before
the event.

3. Attending the Event
The Relay For Life of SunnylslesBeach.GoldenBeach.Aventura will begin on Saturday April 20, 2013 at
5:00 pm and will end on Sunday April 21, 2013 at 11:00 am and will take place at Heritage Park at 19200
Collins Avenue, Sunny Isles Beach. Together, with our colleagues, friends, and family, we can all volunteer to

RE: Sponsorship Donation of $2,000.00 to the American Cancer Society's
Relay for Life Event
RECOMMENDATION:
This Resolution is presented for your approval.
REASONS:
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to raising awareness and prevention of cancer.
Their signature event is the Relay for Life that is aimed at raising funds to support patient
services, research, education, and advocacy, and was held in Sunny Isles Beach this year
and it was very successful. The attached Resolution approves a donation in the amount of
$2,000.00 toward the sponsorship of the 2013 event taking place at Heritage Park
beginning on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 5:00 p.m., and ending on Sunday, April 21,
2013 at 11:00 a.m.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Funding is available from the Commission's Grants to Private Organizations account
number#10-511-5490.
