HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2012-2006 RESOLUTION NO. 2012- "X00 to A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, ESTABLISHING A CHARTER REVISION COMMISSION; PROVIDING FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF MEMBERS TO THE CHARTER REVISION COMMISSION; PROVIDING FOR SUBMISSION OF PROPOSED CHARTER AMENDMENTS TO THE CITY COMMISSION; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 7.4 of the City Charter, the City Commission is required to establish a Charter Revision Commission at its first regular meeting in December of 2012; and WHEREAS, the City Commission has the authority to appoint all the members of the Charter Revision Commission; and WHEREAS, the Charter Revision Commission is required to submit proposed Charter amendments to the City Commission within ninety (90) days after its creation, pursuant to Section 7.4 of the City Charter; and WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City Commission to create the Charter Revision Commission. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA,AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Creation of Charter Revision Commission. Pursuant to its authority under Section 7.4 of the City Charter, the City Commission hereby establishes a Charter Revision Commission to review the City Charter and to propose amendments to the Charter. Section 2. Appointment of Members. The City Commission hereby appoints the following members to the Charter Revision Commission: Mayor: Lewis J. Thaler (Chairperson) Seat 1: John Rusnak Seat 2: Jack Cohen Seat 3: Jorge Camaraza Seat 4: Erica Chao Section 3. Commencement of Work. The Charter Revision Commission is required to commence work within forty-five (45) days or no later than February 4, 2013. Section 4. Submission of Proposed Amendments. The Charter Revision Commission is required to submit proposed amendments to the City Commission within ninety (90) days after its creation or no later than March 20, 2013. The City Commission hereby directs the City Clerk to work with the City Attorney and the Chairperson to schedule a first meeting during the second week of January 2013. Section 6. Effective Date. Hines, CMC, City Clerk DATE: 12/20/2012 RE: Establishment and Appointment of Members to a Charter Revision Commission RECOMMENDATION: Adopt the Resolution establishing and appointing members to a Charter Revision Commission. REASONS: Pursuant to Section 7.4 of the City Charter, the City Commission is required to establish a Charter Revision Commission at it first regular meeting in December of 2012, and every ten (10) years thereafter. The City Commission has the authority to appoint all members of the Charter Revision Commission consisting of five (5) persons from their respective District. The following people have been appointed to the Charter Revision Commission: Lewis J. Thaler (Chairperson), John Rusnak, Jack Cohen, Jorge Camaraza, and Erica Chao. The Charter Revision Commission is required to commence work within 45 days from the creation of the Commission or no later than February 4, 2013, and must submit proposed Charter amendments to the City Commission within 90 days or no later than March 20, 2013. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: In accordance with Section 6.1 of the City Charter, the City Commission shall submit the proposed amendments to the electors of the City in not less than 30 days or more than 60 days after submission of the proposed amendments.
