size, and cost)
The scope of the project consisted of final design for the reconstruction of a
segment and new construction of NW 87th Avenue from NW 74th Street to NW 103rd
Street (2 miles), within the Town of Medley, Florida. NW 87th Avenue is primarily a
north-south urban arterial, Miami-Dade County owned roadway, with a design
speed of 40 mph. The proposed improvements will provide a much needed north-
south corridor along western Miami-Dade County. R.J. Behar & Company, Inc. (RJ
Behar) was responsible for the roadway design, traffic studies, drainage design,
signing and pavement markings, signalization, lighting, and overall coordination.
NW 87th Avenue is an off-system roadway bound by the Florida Greenbook, for its
design criteria. The NW 87 Avenue project included a Shared Use bicycle lane, also
known as a “Sharrow”. The Shared Use bicycle lane was accomplished by utilizing
a 14-foot wide outside travel lane that will be shared by bicyclists and motorists.
The scope of this project included a traffic study to evaluate existing conditions and
develop short-range and longer-term improvement alternatives to address identified
deficiencies and evaluate the proposed alternatives and to determine the optimal
geometrics. Traffic projections, traffic operations and signal warrants for eight
intersections in an area involving three major roadways were also performed.
Several improvements were identified that significantly improved operation and safety. Study was successfully completed and
received approval by FDOT
The drainage design for the project included a series of interconnected French drains and new outfall to the Miami Canal. The
design was especially challenging because of the presence of contamination in several parts of the project. The project was
permitted with the South Florida Water Management District and the Miami Dade Department of Environmental Protection (DERM).
The project included a new bridge over the Miami Canal. A Bridge Hydraulic Report (BHR) was prepared for the new crossing,
addressing canal hydraulics, scour and bridge clearances.
