Longitudinal Structural System (Spine)
As a result of our initial screening of superstructure systems, we propose a main spine of three redundant
prestressed 72-inch FUBs tied together by diaphragms. An 8-inch concrete slab will be cast-in-place and
made composite to increase bending and torsional stiffness.
Benefits of 72-inch FUB superstructure spine include:

Internal Redundancy
Fully bonded prestressing beams are internally redundant, that is,
partial damage to the bottom flange of the FUB does not result in
a collapse of the beam.

External Redundancy
Three FUB beams connected with internal and external
diaphragms create an externally redundant structural system.
This means there are multiple load paths to prevent a collapse if
a member fails.
Torsional Resistance Box section with composite deck efficiently carries torsional loads
from cantilever brackets.

Category 1 System
Use of FDOT Standards and redundancy of the FUB system meets
the criteria to be a FDOT Category 1 system. Prior to the 2020
FDM updates this system would not have required a Peer Review
and will provide FDOT reviewers with a high level of comfort.

FDOT Standard System
FUBs are detailed in the FDOT Standard Plans and have been
developed for harsh environments and highway loadings. FDOT
reviewers will be familiar with the necessary design calculations.
Fabricators and contractors will be able to provide consistent
pricing since elements and construction techniques are
conventional.

Erection
FUBs are shipped and erected in one piece and can carry dead and
construction loadings without any additional post-tensioning
operations at the site.

Inspection
Relative to a post-tensioned system, FUBs are simpler to inspect
since there are no grout filled ducts with potential for water
infiltration or interior cable systems.

Durability
Continuously bonded prestressed strands pre-compress the
concrete which improves durability by minimizing cracks in the
extremely corrosive oceanfront environment.

Aesthetics FUB provides a smooth base with minimal visual clutter.

D-14
