GEOTECHNICAL
Substrata
The rock formations in South Florida are amongst the youngest in the country. This region of Florida is
divided into two topographic areas, the Atlantic Coastal Ridge and the Everglades.
In the City of Sunny Isles Beach, the surface consists of two to five feet of granular fill underlain by layers
of peat and/or organic silt to depths of about 10 to 15 feet below ground. Below this the Miami Limestone
Formation is generally encountered. The Fort Thompson Formation underlies the Miami Limestone and is
characterized by salt water limestone with localized freshwater limestone deposits. The formation is very
fossiliferous, highly porous and permeable, and contains coquina-like structures in certain areas.

Bridge Park Substrata Sketch
D-23
