<br />Potential species for the lower planting areas adjacent to the pathway benches include Montgomery <br />Palms and Simpson Stoppers which remain short and the palms have smaller fronds reducing the safety <br />hazard of falling fronds. The proposed palm and tree species also maintain smaller root balls, therefore <br />reducing the amount of soil and depth of planter space necessary to thrive. <br />Two species of shrubs provide the necessary aesthetics. Massings of Green Island ficus alternating with <br />massings of Silver Buttonwood introduce a splash of color and changes of texture to the landscape. These <br />species will grow in thick and can be tall enough to meet the grade of the pedestrian pathway level. The <br />Silver Buttonwood will be maintained to be taller than the Green Island ficus, creating a wave pattern to <br />mirror the natural shape of the bridge. The massings of Green Island ficus will be paired with columnar <br />growing Simpson Stoppers while the Silver Buttonwood will be paired with multi-trunk Montgomery <br />palms. <br />The selected Florida native and Florida-friendly species require little water minimizing irrigation needs. <br />Irrigation will include shrub flood heads, tree bubblers and drip irrigation within the planters. It will be <br />necessary to have each area be on its own zone. It is recommended that the soils be coarse rather than <br />fine grain organic. This will allow for a higher rate of percolation to the proposed drainage system. The <br />larger soil particles will not infiltrate into the drainage system preventing clogging <br /> <br />Hardscape features for the Bridge Park will be complementary to the structure, surrounding area and <br />surfaces established within the Park. Suitable concrete and/or paver surfaces ranging from standard <br />concrete to aggregate finishes will be explored and proposed with pedestrian bridge package. The areas <br />surrounding the pedestrian pathway will consist of undulating strips of artificial turf, reminiscent of the <br />waves and dunes of nearby beaches. <br />Bridge Park Planting Detail Sketch <br />D-25
