Brief description of project and relevance to this contract (Include scope, size, and cost)

In 2000, Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management (County) initiated
the Lake Worth Lagoon (LWL) Fixed Transect Seagrass Monitoring Project. Annual monitoring along
fixed transects throughout the LWL has been conducted every year except 2006, with the objective of
determining whether the monitored seagrass beds are stable, expanding, or receding over time.
Fluctuations in seagrass cover have been documented, with major decreases associated with periodic
large-scale freshwater releases into the LWL. The 2013 through 2018 annual fixed transect surveys
have documented continued seagrass habitat loss from the central and south segments of the lagoon.

Cummins Cederberg conducted the 2020 biannual surveys for the County. A series of permanent
stations were monitored along ten fixed transects for seagrass presence and cover, as well as line-
intercept for seagrass bed extent. Water quality parameters were also collected using a YSI meter at
each site to measure salinity, temperature, Dissolved Oxygen and pH. Data will be compared against
the previous year’s results to examine trends in seagrass distribution and cover during the assessed
timeframe, and evaluated in conjunction with collected water quality data, and data from local water
quality monitoring programs.

Active contract: Yes
Fees to date: $59,265

25.
