tf
Architectural, landscape Architectural,
Engineering and Land Surveying Firms Only (CCNA)
® Along with recommendations for improving the facilities for all modes of travel, Kimley -Horn can explore ways to improve traffic
® signalization through expanded capabilities of the existing computerized traffic signal systems in the project area and the possible
integration of intelligent transportation system components.
A
Intersection Design
A roadway intersection is a critical building block in any transportation
infrastructure. The efficiency of intersection operation maximizes
the efficiency of the entire roadway system. Unfortunately, as travel
patterns change and grow, intersections need to be "re- tuned" to
provide long -term safe operation.
To design a new intersection or to retune an existing intersection,
the elements of an intersection, both individually and collectively,
must be understood. Every intersection has a unique combination of
elements— roadway layout, signal equipment, and mix and volume
of vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles. As a result, every intersection
requires careful study prior to designing the various intersection design
elements to produce a safe and efficient intersection.
A good intersection design also allows the intersection, when signalized, to adjust timing automatically to changes in traffic
volumes and travel patterns. Kimley -Horn is committed to this type design and approaches this project with a "large toolbox" and a
clear understanding of regional and local intersection planning and design.
• Traffic Calming
® Kimley- Horn's team of roadway designers, traffic engineers, and planners knows how to design roadways that accommodate a
defined volume of through traffic and pedestrian/bicycle usage while serving as corridors for business and residential development.
® All reasonable efforts are made to restore a balance between automobiles and pedestrians. When addressing the functional and
® aesthetic needs of municipal road corridors, Kimley- Horn's team emphasizes a wide variety of traffic calming principles, including:
• Narrowed lane widths that serve to slow traffic and reduce the overall street width —while providing safer pedestrian
crossings.
• Heavily landscaped medians that reduce the appearance of expansive paving, help slow traffic, lower the number of
accidents, and promote pedestrian safety through the provision of median "refuges" at crosswalk locations.
• Raised intersections (or `speed tables ") equal to the elevation of the sidewalk, that redefine the road as a "pedestrian area
through which traffic must pass" vs. traditional intersections that are clearly `vehicular spaces through which pedestrians
and bicyclists must pass." Such intersection designs often incorporate special paving designs to further reinforce their
presence and importance.
• Paving designs, including the use of pre -cast paving
systems or color asphaltic pavement mixes, help to -
'announce' intersections or neighborhood gateways,
and they provide a unique character and quality to the
®
roadway corridor. Kimley -Horn has also used special
pavement striping patterns to create special areas,
®
thereby reducing vehicle speeds.
®
• Traffic circles (or "roundabouts") that permit the
®
development of major gateway features, calm through
traffic and, in some instances, even improve the flow of
®
traffic.
® OY2-i00 M4.
