Design Standards
The following standards are recommended for dune preservation, maintenance,
and creation based on the review of available information, site investigations,
habitat creation/improvement, aesthetics/viewshed, and increased storm
protective value. Overall, a 2:1 (beach to dune) ratio is recommended for the
functionality of dune protection and habitat services.
Properties with NO Dunes
Management Recommendations
• Plant sea oats and or other pioneer zone species in designated area.
• Plant species should be selected from the Recommended Palette provided.
• The planting area should be a minimum of 20 feet from the exiting seawall.
• Dunes should be planted at grade.
• Prune or limb -up tree species as necessary to provide window -pane views.
• All access points should be at a 45* angle towards the ocean.
• Access points should be a minimum of 6 feet wide.
• Given an average width of the beach and the dune system of 120 feet, at
2:1 ratio (beach: dune) is recommended, with a dune width of 40 feet (to
be reduced as required), providing a recreational beach width of +/- 80
feet, which allows for utilization by a variety of plants.
• Planting areas larger than 100 square feet should utilize a minimum of
three plant species.
• Planting areas larger than 1000 square feet should utilize a minimum of
eight plants species.
• No more than 20% of each species will populate dune planting areas (with
the exception of sea oats).
• Where the dune is wide enough and where property owners allow, Pioneer
Zones, Strand Zones and Coastal Hammock Zones should be planted by
utilizing species from the Recommended Palette and placement in
appropriate zone.
• Seaward edge planting should be largely in line with existing stable
vegetation.
