Summary Minutes: Regular City Commission Meeting September 18, 2014 City of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida
to his other projects, and so he feels like we got a tremendous benefit here because he has
been able to buy obviously the land on either side of the original Acqualina project. He
thanked the developers and they have his overwhelming support for the project.
Vice Mayor Aelion said the renaissance style, the elegant plan, the two towers are very much
in line with the present on the beach adjacent to them. As far as being in line with the
Comprehensive Plan with the required zoning, allowances, setbacks, number of units, etc. it is
very appropriate with the number of units and still be within Code. It is very commendable
that the developer and the architect have thought of elegance and put it in front of the
economic bottom line. He also supports this project.
Commissioner Gatto said it is always a pleasure to review one of these zoning items without
variances because it takes stress off from things and we are able to give the building for what
it is. She loves the idea that there are two towers with 150 feet of space in between, and it
kind of honors the area with blue sky, the beach, and blue water which can be seen from the
street at certain angles. It was a very thoughtful thing to do, they exceeded the Code but
basically they are under Code on a lot of things. It is very impressive and she really likes it.
The design of the building is beautiful, it seems to be a little bit contained of a City in a City,
which is a fun thing to think about. She thinks the Trumps are bringing a beautiful aesthetic
to our City, and she supports it.
Mayor Edelcup said we certainly have learned to expect the outstanding from Jules, Stephanie
and Eddie and they deliver time and time again the quality and the excellence that has helped
make our City the tremendous location that it is. Certainly putting 1,100 feet of frontage
together with tall skinny buildings meets the original goal of our City as former City
Commissioner Gerry Goodman would remember when we first set our Codes together for tall
skinny buildings. He also took the opportunity to thank the Trumps for the staff because City
Hall is right across from your new property and you have given us some wonderful views and
you are not blocking our view to see the ocean. Mr. Schulman said we will also have a
restaurant where you could have a luncheon. Mayor Edelcup thanked them for taking us into
account here at City Hall as well, and he closed the public hearing.
Vice Mayor Aelion asked when will construction take place, both Towers in tandem? Mr.
Schulman said we don't know at this point, it is going to be sort of market driven. Whichever
tower is built first or both, the amenity package, the Villa, will be built with whatever that
tower is because you have to have the amenities for the people in that building. As to the
exact sequence or whether they are both going to go up at the same time, we just don't know.
Commissioner Scholl moved and Commissioner Gatto seconded a motion for approval,
subject to staff conditions. Resolution No. 14 -Z -144 was adopted by a roll call vote of 5-
0 in favor.
Vote: Commissioner Gatto
ves
Commissioner Levin
ves
Commissioner Scholl
ves
Vice Mayor Aelion
ves
Mayor Edelcup
ves
[City Clerk's More: Related Item IOV was heard after Item 6A. ]
