It shall not contain more than 10% (by volume) bark and shall not contain roots <br />or root pieces. <br />c. Shreds and chips shall not be larger than 3/4 inch diameter and 1 1/2 inch in <br />length. <br />d. Mulch shall be free of weed seeds, soil and on other organic or inorganic <br />material. <br />e. Prior to its final processing, mulch will have been inspected and certified by the <br />Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant <br />Industry, as free of burrowing nematodes <br />f. During processing, raw materials shall be stacked and stored in curing piles for <br />no less than 120 days. <br />g. All proofs of delivery shall bear the official State of Florida stamp of inspection <br />and verification. <br />3. Installation: <br />a. Mulch shall be applied to a minimum depth of three inches in planting beds and <br />around trees. <br />b. Mulch shall taper down to soil level at a distance of 3 inches from the base of <br />trees and shrubs. <br /> <br />1.3 PLANTING REQUIREMENTS: <br /> <br />A. Delivery: <br />1. All materials must be available for inspection before installation and will be subject to <br />approval or rejection. <br />B. Layout: <br />1. Mark proposed planting beds and individual locations of trees and palms as shown in the <br />Contract Documents for Engineer’s review, prior to excavation or planting. <br />2. The Engineer may request to review all proposed construction and maintenance practices <br />before the start of the operations. <br />3. Make no changes to the layout, materials or any variations of plant materials from the <br />Contract Documents without the Engineer’s written approval. <br />C. Soil Drainage: <br />1. All planting holes and beds must drain sufficiently prior to installing any plants. <br />Immediately notify the Engineer of drainage or percolation problems before plant <br />installation. <br />D. Installation of Plants: <br />1. For installation of the plants as identified in the Contract Documents, comply with the <br />requirements of the FDOT Design Standards, Index No. 544. <br />2. Personnel performing these services are under the sole responsibility and supervision of <br />the Contractor and must be competent, experienced, and skilled in all aspects of the <br />required landscape installation and establishment practices. <br />E. Contractor’s Responsibility for Condition of the Plantings: <br />1. Begin maintenance of all plants immediately after each planting. Keep all plants watered, <br />fertilized, mulched, pruned, and staked and guyed as necessary to assure specified <br />minimum grade of Florida No. 1 throughout the duration of the project construction <br />period and establishment period. <br />2. During the establishment period, keep the individual planting locations and planting beds <br />free of litter and undesirable vegetation.
