Summary Minutes:Regular City Commission Meeting November 20.2014 City of Sunny Isles Beach.Florida
that he bid goodbye to this elective office. He thanked the resident voters of Sunny Isles
Beach for first electing him to the Commission on that fateful day of September 11, 2001
when our World Trade Center in New York was destroyed which was a bittersweet day. He
has proudly served as the Mayor for the last eleven (11) years since the death of Mayor
Samson in October of 2003.
Mayor Edelcup said since the first days of our City's incorporation, what we have achieved is
really remarkable. We took a community that was in decline and decay and transformed it
into a sophisticated shining City on the sea that is now known worldwide as a favorite
destination to our visitors and permanent residents. That transformation did not happen by
accident but was the result of a lot of hard work, not only by this Commission but by the
preceding Commission and all the City officials and employees that have worked diligently
to make this a wonderful City. Good planning, fiscal soundness, and smart growth coupled
with the perfect oceanfront location spells success. In the 17 years we have taken this one
square mile community from a tax base of just over a Billion Dollars to today's nearly Eight
Billion Dollars. We have lower tax rates, and we have built ten (10) parks and over twenty
(20)beach accesses. We have partnered with the County to build a K-8 public school which
he is honored to have named after him. Additionally we have developed one of the best
cultural activities programs for our residents and visitors. We restored the last remaining
Pier in Miami-Dade County, and protected our people with the finest Police Force in the
nation.
Mayor Edelcup said he leaves public office now knowing that the City will continue to grow
and prosper under a new City Commission and Mayor, and he is sure he will lead the City to
greater heights. It is his wish that the sun, moon, and stars will always shine on our great
City of Sunny Isles Beach. He thanked everyone for the wonderful opportunity of serving
this community. He will now continue in the community as an active citizen and a member
of the newly created Sunny Isles Beach Foundation formed to provide enhanced cultural and
educational programs and events in our City. Again, thanks for giving him the opportunity of
being your Mayor and he will always cherish this moment of his life.
13.
