Giovanni Bonita, Ph.D, PE, PG
<br />Senior Vice President
<br />Dr. Bonita is a Senior Vice President with GEI. His experience is in the areas of geotechnical
<br />and geostructural engineering, tunneling, hydrogeology, geophysics, groundwater and
<br />seepage, karst geology, and geologic mapping. Dr. Bonita has over 26 years of experience
<br />with complex underground structures, cutoff walls, underpinning, retaining systems, ground
<br />improvement, protection of adjacent structures, geological and geophysical investigations,
<br />and deep foundations. He has extensive expertise with temporary and permanent slurry,
<br />soil mix, secant, soldier pile and lagging, and soil nail walls for dams, historic buildings,
<br />structures with deep foundations, access shafts, transit systems, tunnels, and tall buildings.
<br />Dr. Bonita has used traditional and advanced analytical techniques to recommend and
<br />design excavation and ground improvement methods and foundation systems for major
<br />high-profile private and public works projects with difficult engineering challenges. Dr. Bonita
<br />has also served as the Engineer of Record for several large dam design and rehabilitation
<br />projects. Dr. Bonita is currently an Adjunct Faculty member in the Civil Engineering
<br />Department at Catholic University in Washington, DC, and he is the past Chairman of the
<br />Slurry Wall Committee for the Deep Foundations Institute.
<br />PROJECT EXPERIENCE
<br />Brickell CitiCenter, Miami, FL: Served as Engineer of Record and Senior Designer for a
<br />unique basement soil mix DSM plug to control water flow and uplift into a deep excavation.
<br />Work included evaluation of soil properties, mix designs, and soil mix data, 3D numerical
<br />analysis of the soil and construction conditions, evaluation of the uplift pressures on the DSM
<br />plug, design of Auger Cast Pile foundation and tiedown system to support structures, and
<br />evaluation of foundation systems. The Brickell CitiCenter project, which encompasses four
<br />city blocks is the largest plan area of deep excavation in Miami to date.
<br />Jade Signature, Miami, FL: Served as Engineer of Record and Senior Designer for a
<br />basement soil mix DSM plug to control water flow and uplift into a deep excavation for a
<br />52 story tower. Also served as the EOR for a 36-foot-deep gravity DSM bulkhead wall and a
<br />30-foot cantilever soil mix and structural beam SOE wall. Work included evaluation of soil
<br />properties, mix designs, and soil mix data, 3D numerical analysis of the soil and construction
<br />conditions, evaluation of differential settlement and cracking potential of the DSM plug,
<br />evaluation of the uplift pressures on the DSM plug, design of foundation and Auger Cast Pile
<br />and tiedown systems, and evaluation of foundation systems. The Jade Signature project is
<br />the deepest excavation in Miami to date.
<br />Royal Palms, Boca Raton, FL: Served as Engineer of Record for a basement soil mix DSM
<br />plug to control water flow and uplift into a deep excavation. Also served as the EOR for a
<br />20-foot cantilever DSM and beam SOE wall. Work included evaluation of soil properties, mix
<br />designs, and soil mix data, 3D numerical analysis of the soil and construction conditions,
<br />evaluation of differential settlement and cracking potential of the DSM plug, evaluation of
<br />the uplift pressures on the DSM plug, design of and Auger Cast Pile and tiedown systems, and

<br />Center Hill Dam, Cookeville, TN: Served as GEI’s technical lead, Senior Project Manager,
<br />and Engineer of Record for a seepage barrier wall cutoff project in karst geology. Responsible
<br />for technical proposal, technical oversight of all engineering, cost and budget analyses,
<br />management of large contingency of field staff, implementation of a rigorous quality control
<br />system established by USACE, civil works and platform construction, and an upstream
<br />extension of the dam. Initial technical work involved the design and implementation of a
<br />large exploration and testing program, including unconfined compression testing, pressure
<br />and water testing (including packer and hydrojack testing, detailed geologic mapping,
<br />including discontinuities using ISM criteria, fracture and bedding plane discontinuities, and
<br />upstage and grouting for the assessment of the feasibility of karst seepage and a cutoff wall
<br />system. Technical responsibilities involved the design and oversight of the installation of a
