<br />Melinda Mohamed
<br />Ecologist and Project Coordinator
<br />Melinda Mohamed is an ecologist and project coordinator. She has over 15 years of
<br />experience in interpreting local, state, federal, and international environmental policy,
<br />writing and presenting scientific information to audiences of varying scientific backgrounds,
<br />and independently surveying and collecting data on sensitive natural resources
<br />in remote areas.
<br />Melinda has a wide variety of consulting experience, including frequent site assessments,
<br />authoring sections of California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)-level and other
<br />assessment reports, and biological monitoring for special-status species. She has multiple
<br />years’ experience in northern California conducting surveys, monitoring for high profile
<br />special-status species, and preparing reports for state and federal agencies, including NMFS,
<br />USFWS, and CDFW. In addition, Melinda worked for 1.5 years on a high-profile commercial
<br />solar energy development project in coordination with local and state agencies.
<br />Melinda has a wide range of knowledge and multiple years academic work in freshwater
<br />and marine systems. Her undergraduate experience included research into aquatic wildlife
<br />communities in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Ms. Mohamed’s post-graduate work included an
<br />internship with Point Blue Conservation Science investigating the role of newly implemented
<br />Marine Protected Areas on nearby marine wildlife. She completed her Master’s thesis work
<br />with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in the UK investigating international commercial tuna
<br />fishing practices.
<br />PROJECT EXPERIENCE
<br />Tide’s End Multibenefit Restoration Project, Ecosystem Investment Partners, Yolo
<br />County, CA. Ecologist for the project that would connect contiguous properties and complete
<br />a 10-mile landscape corridor of uninterrupted floodplain and wetland habitat in an area
<br />of the Delta critical for smelt and salmonid habitat restoration. The Project would restore
<br />and enhance tidal wetland, floodplain habitat, and managed floodplain habitat (including
<br />managed wetlands for waterfowl, floodplain agriculture, and associated infrastructure)
<br />across the entire 2,212-acre Project area. Proposed Project activities would further the goals
<br />and objectives of the Central Valley Flood Protection Plan and other systemwide priorities
<br />by managing floodway roughness, maintaining long-term flood capacity, and reducing
<br />potential flood encroachments in the Yolo Bypass. Leading the preparation of permit
<br />applications for Clean Water Act Section 404 and 401 and preparing the Lake and Streambed
<br />Alteration Agreement section of the Restoration Management Permit as well as preparing the
<br />CVFPB permit application. The project is following the Statewide Restoration Grant Order
<br />permitting process and Melinda is assisting on applications and species relocation plans for
<br />northwestern pond turtle, giant gartersnake, and special-status fish.
<br />Central Valley Flood Protection Plan Conservation Strategy, California Department of
<br />Water Resources, Sacramento, CA. Ecologist who assisted team and DWR with development
<br />of the CVFPP Conservation Strategy. Development of the Conservation Strategy included
<br />identifying ecosystem restoration opportunities throughout the CVFPP Systemwide Planning
<br />Area and delineating, at a conceptual level, specific river reaches where key ecosystem
<br />functions could be restored and incorporated into CVFPP Management Actions.
<br />Coyote Creek Flood Protection Project EIR and WIFIA PEAQ, Santa Clara Valley Water
<br />District, Sunnyvale, CA. Assistance in providing CEQA compliance document and NMFS
<br />Biological Assessment for Valley Water’s CCFPP to develop flood protection measures
<br />including berms, floodwalls, passive flood barriers, and additional flood protection measures
<br />along Coyote Creek within the City of San Jose. GEI is preparing environmental studies and
<br />CEQA/NEPA documents on an aggressive schedule.
