<br />Katlin Walling is a Senior Coastal Engineer in GEI’s Portland, ME office and has over a decade
<br />of well-rounded, diverse background in coastal engineering. Katlin has built her experience
<br />by managing and executing tasks on projects across the U.S. and internationally, serving
<br />clients from local communities to major energy developers.
<br />Mrs. Walling’s coastal and waterfront project background includes coastal condition analyses,
<br />storm damage assessments, shoreline stabilization, flood protection, nature-based solutions,
<br />and living shorelines.
<br />Mrs. Walling is also experienced in the offshore wind and renewable energy industry, where
<br />she specializes in submarine cable routing, installation, and protection.
<br />PROJECT EXPERIENCE
<br />Renewable Energy Submarine Transmission Line Route, Private Client, U.S. East
<br />Coast. Lead project engineer for the preliminary route assessment and development
<br />of approximately 40 miles of submarine cable installation in riverine environments.
<br />Assessments included evaluation of riverine natural and anthropogenic risks to submarine
<br />cable installation and protection, geophysical survey data, riverbed morphology, existing
<br />utility crossings, and a Cable Burial Risk Assessment. Performed permit application
<br />document development, technical presentations to agencies, and reviews of cable installer
<br />submittals.
<br />Offshore Wind Cable Landfall Engineering Assessment, Confidential Client, U.S.
<br />East Coast. Lead project engineer for submarine cable landfall assessments for multiple
<br />locations on the U.S. East Coast. Investigated feasibility, alternative methodologies, and
<br />conceptual design for cable landfalls at a variety of geographic shorelines including open
<br />coastal beaches, urban port facilities, and residential waterfront areas. Assessment evaluated
<br />shoreline erosion and morphology, vessel navigation and traffic constraints, existing cables,
<br />seabed obstructions, and physical restrictions.
<br />Nearshore Submarine Cable Route and Landfall Review, Private Client, U.S. Mid-
<br />Atlantic Coast. Lead project engineer for a constructability review and risk assessment of
<br />a proposed subsea cable and landfall route within the nearshore region. Evaluated physical
<br />and anthropogenic site conditions such as seabed elevations and slopes, erosion and
<br />morphology, water current velocities, vessel traffic data, navigation constraints, marine
<br />vessel and equipment access and limitations. Evaluated suitability of cable installation burial
<br />tools, identified potential installation risks, and developed alternative alignment concepts.
<br />Shoreline Protection, Texas General Land Office, TX. Project engineer for the analysis and
<br />design of a shoreline protection system for a 1,700 LF stretch of eroding shoreline at Indian
<br />Point, TX, adjacent to the Nueces Bay Causeway. The project includes a coastal engineering
<br />analysis of historical, existing, and future conditions, such as extreme waves, water levels, sea
<br />level rise, sediment transport, and winds. The protection system design consists of detached
<br />segmented breakwaters with habitat enhancing elements.
<br />Waterfront Roadway Shoreline Protection Projects, Aransas County, TX. Project engineer
<br />for the analysis and design of over two miles of living shorelines and breakwaters at three
<br />project sites within Aransas County, TX. Performed coastal engineering analysis of existing
<br />conditions, alternatives analysis for testing alternative breakwater structural arrangements,
<br />and SWAN wave modeling to evaluate performance of proposed breakwaters. Developed
<br />alternatives analysis technical report, permit applications, public meeting presentations, and
<br />reviewed plans and specifications.
<br />Jetty Damage Assessment and Repair, Avalon Borough, Cape May County, NJ. Performed
<br />site inspection and damage evaluation of the jetty, which experienced structural damage in
<br />the wake of Winter Storm Jonas. Prepared application package and successfully obtained
<br />FEMA funding for damage repairs. Coordinated surveying efforts and plan development.
<br />Assisted with engineering design of repairs.
