The
project consisted of the following:
• Construction of an all new floating dock marina
• 28,000 square feet of floating dock with 240 piles
• Maintenance dredging of 7,500 cubic yards
• Improvement dredging (deepening within existing footprint) to -8 feet mean low water
(MLW) of 17,100 cubic yards
• Construction of a new ADA-compliant access to the
ferry and other passenger vessels
Main walkway floats were constructed of concrete for
improved stability and to provide a protected route
for the main utilities within the marina. All other floats
are comprised of timber or composite decking to
maintain a similar appearance to the existing marina.
The float system is protected against ice damage by a
bubbler system.
GEI was responsible for facility assessment, marina
reconfiguration design, preliminary design, obtainment
of local, state, and federal regulatory approvals, final
design, and construction documents. The project was
completed in 2018 and is now in service.
DATES
2018
Completed on schedule
FEES
Original Budget: Engineer’s
estimate: $7.0 million
Actual Budget:
Bid price: $7.2 million; total
project cost: $8.5 million
CLIENT REFERENCE
JOHN RENDON
Harbormaster Town of
Harwich
508.430.7532
KEY ELEMENTS
• Site Assessment
• Marina Float System
Evaluation
• Development of
Alternative Layouts
• Final Marina
Reconfiguration
• Dredging
• ADA-Compliant Access
• Passenger Vessel Landing
• Wave Loading
• Mooring System Design
• Regulatory Approvals
• Construction Documents
Innovation: Reconfigured marina
layout using wave and mooring
analyses to improve vessel safety
and ADA-compliant public access.
Cost Savings: Phased design
development and accurate dredging
quantities resulted in bids closely
aligned with the engineer’s estimate.
Risk Reduction: Early coordination
with permitting agencies and
harbormaster staff reduced schedule
risk and supported a smooth
construction phase.
