RFQ #26-07-01 Continuing Professional Architectural and Engineering Consulting Services | 26MLA00190 | Page 31 QualificationsSection 2 <br /> <br /> <br />FDOT District 4/ City of Fort Lauderdale <br />US 1/Henry Kinney Tunnel/Las Olas Tunnel Plaza <br />Fort Lauderdale, Florida <br /> <br />Miller Legg was responsible for providing landscape <br />architecture, irrigation, hardscape and in-depth construction <br />observation services for the highly urbanized US 1 corridor <br />through the famous Henry Kinney Tunnel. Miller Legg’s <br />involvement in the high-profile project centered around the <br />Henry Kinney Tunnel Top Plaza, a 115’ terraced pedestrian <br />plaza extension over the north US 1 tunnel, and its connection <br />south to the New River. The Plaza included ‘table topping’ Las <br />Olas Boulevard and three (3) existing plazas. <br /> <br />The project transformed these four areas collectively into a <br />cohesive pedestrian plaza experience, creating a unique, <br />iconic, destination along Las Olas Boulevard. Funding for the <br />pedestrian Plaza was through the City of Fort Lauderdale’s <br />2016 Parks Bond and led by FDOT as part of the Henry Kinney <br />Tunnel Rehabilitation, for which Miller Legg led collaborative <br />efforts to meet the needs of both entities. <br /> <br />Unique project features included fluid patterns of multi- <br />colored textured concrete weaving throughout the four <br />plazas and roadway, an iconic fountain centerpiece that <br />doubled as an opportunity for public art, custom seat walls <br />throughout, and a vibrant plant palette softening the urban <br />hardscape. To maximize pedestrian usage of hardscape areas, <br />Miller Legg utilized a system of underground tree cells to <br />allow for additional root zone space for large canopy shade <br />trees. Public engagement 3D rendering exhibits illustrating <br />the transformation were produced during design for <br />extensive coordination with the City administration, City Parks <br />Bond Committee and public engagement.
