STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING RELEVANT PROJECTS Veterans Memorial Island Bridge Repairs and Replacement, Vero Beach, FL This project involves the replacement of the exis�ng Veterans Memorial Island bridge over the Rio Mar Bay within the Indian River Lagoon. The replacement bridge is a 3-span prestressed concrete slab unit bridge that is designed to follow FDOT design criteria for an extremely corrosive environment. The bridge u�lizes stainless steel reinforcing steel in the substructure to provide corrosion resistance in this extremely aggressive environment. In addi�on to designing the bridge, Kimley-Horn designed the u�lity reloca�ons, approach roadway, and revetment. This bridge was constructed in an environmentally sensi�ve area and required extensive environmental permi�ng associated with the removal of mangroves as well as oyster reloca�ons. With this bridge being the only access to an island, the City wanted the bridge replaced within a 4-month window. The bridge was designed with �me-sensi�ve elements in mind and inves�gated material availability. Kimley-Horn also assisted the City in the bidding and construc�on phases of the project. Kimley-Horn hosted weekly progress mee�ngs, coordinated material tes�ng, inspected the progress of the work, reviewed pay applica�ons, conducted and coordinated the as-built load ra�ng with FDOT, and managed project closeout. Dates of Service: 2020–2022 Contact: Danessa Chambers, PE, City of Vero Beach Public Works Department, 772.978.4815 Lighthouse Point Bridge Repairs, Lighthouse Point, FL As part of a Con�nuing Services contract, Kimley-Horn was retained to conduct field reviews and develop bridge repair plans to facilitate there habilita�on of eight City-owned vehicular bridges and two pedestrian bridges. The repair plans were developed to address the deficiencies observed on the field visit and the FDOT Bridge Inspec�on Reports. There are no as- built plans available for any of the seven 1950s-constructed bridges. In addi�on to developing repair plans, Kimley-Horn performed a load ra�ng analysis on the exis�ng bridge u�lizing field measurements, results of rebar scanning, and measured reinforcement sizes. Kimley-Horn also assisted the City in the bidding phase and the construc�on phase of the project. Dates of Service: 2022–2025 Contact: Jim Finley, City of Lighthouse Point Public Works, 954.868.4135 Walton Scrub Preserve Observa�on Tower, Port St. Lucie, FL Kimley-Horn was retained by St. Lucie County Environmental Resources Department to study and design an observa�on tower within the Walton Scrub Preserve. This is a 50-foot-tall observa�on tower in the Walton Scrub Preserve that is aimed to educate the public on the County’s natural resources within the adjacent Savannas Preserve, Walton Scrub Preserve, and Indian River Lagoon. We evaluated different geometric layouts as well as various material types in developing the concepts. The layout pictured is the alterna�ve the County selected to take to final design and consisted of a weathering steel structural frame and some �mber elements to provide the County with a low long-term maintenance structure.
