Population
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, between April 2010 and April 2013 South
Florida's population increased 2.68%, adding nearly 150,000 residents. At just under
5.8 million residents, the MSA stands as the eighth largest metropolitan area in the
nation and accounts for approximately 30% of the state's population.
During that same period Florida's population increased by 458,000 residents for a total
growth rate of 2.44% which ranks third in the nation. The national average was 1.7%.
At just under 19.3 million residents, Florida remains the fourth largest state and is on
track to break the 20 million mark during 2016, becoming the third most populous state
sometime before then — surpassing New York. Two sources contributing to Florida's
population growth during that period was the net migration, which accounted for 70%,
and the births over deaths accounted for 30%.
