72
Academic Village
The 80-acre Academic Village encompasses academic, recreational, and cultural
resources for the City. Modeled after Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village at the
University of Virginia, the campus is anchored by the Pembroke Pines Charter High School
and incorporates the Southwest Broward County Regional Library, Broward College,
Florida International University, and the River of Grass Cultural Center. Our firm created the
educational specifications, programmatic requirements, master plan design, and building
character of the entire campus. Pembroke Pines Charter School System was created as a
response to unprecedented population growth and an overburdened School District.
To expedite construction, the City chose the design/build delivery method. The campus
includes high school and college classrooms, laboratories, administrative spaces, library,
cafeteria and dining facilities, and theater. Outdoor performance and gallery spaces,
Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, and 30-acre environmental
studies wetland complete the campus.
Client Pembroke Pines Charter School
System
Services Master Planning
Design Criteria Professional
Programming
Status Completed in 2003
Success With our guidance, the City
adopted a design/build delivery
method to bring the $60 million
project to completion ahead of
schedule and under budget.
Study
