The motion was approved by a roll call vote of 5- <br /> 0 in favor. Second reading, public hearing will be held on Thursday,June 18,2015,at <br /> 6:30 p.m. <br /> Vote: Commissioner Aelion yes <br /> Commissioner Goldman yes <br /> Commissioner Levin yes <br /> Vice Mayor Gatto yes <br /> Mayor Scholl yes <br /> 7B. An Ordinance of the City Commission of the City of Sunny Isles Beach,Florida,Amending <br /> Chapter 172 ("Human Relations") of the Code of Ordinances to Prohibit Discrimination <br /> Against Persons Based on Gender Identity or Gender Expression; Providing for <br /> Severability; Providing for Inclusion in the Code; Providing for Repeal of Conflicting <br /> Provisions; and Providing for an Effective Date. <br /> Action:City Clerk Hines read the title,and City Attorney Ottinot reported that the purpose of <br /> this Ordinance is to strengthen the City's anti-discrimination protections to prohibit <br /> discrimination against persons based on gender identity or gender expression. He noted that <br /> this Ordinance was sponsored by Commissioner Jennifer Levin. <br /> Public Speakers: None <br /> Commissioner Levin said last month we had a resolution concerning the shuttle bus that we <br /> would not discriminate against certain classes of people in hiring. She rose the issue at that <br /> time that the classes of persons listed in the policy did not include sexual orientation or <br /> gender identity. Staff went back and looked at it and talked to Miami-Dade County. Those <br /> two classes of people are now protected in the policy with regard to our shuttle buses. She <br /> understands that we already had an ordinance protecting hiring processes on the basis of <br /> sexual orientation, and so she had asked for this ordinance so that we now protect hiring <br /> discrimination against people on the basis of gender identity or gender expression. <br /> Commissioner Aelion moved and Vice Mayor Gatto seconded a motion to approve the <br /> proposed Ordinance on first reading. The motion was approved by a roll call vote of 5- <br /> 0 in favor.
