Parker reported
noting that the last addition to this was in 2012. By adopting the 2015 Miami -Dade County
Local Mitigation Strategy the City will obtain the required credit for the National Flood
Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) recertification process. This
allows us to work with the other cities of Miami -Dade County in the event of an emergency.
We work together and coordinate our efforts toward damage assessment and other issues.
We were admitted into the CRS Program in 2007 and at that time we were Classification 8
which gave our citizens a 10% reduction on their flood insurance. In 2012 we were able to
upgrade to a 7 which gave us a 15% reduction.
Public Speakers: None
Commissioner Aelion asked if this is strictly about insurance premiums paid collectively or
is there something else about strategic use? Mr. Parker said it is a combination of a lot of
things. Commissioner Aelion said he is a little bit concerned because the City has in a very
responsible way, amassed $17 -19 Million for emergency services, etc. and he does not think
that should be considered as a tool or a venue for any mitigated use. City Manager Russo
said no, it also assists us in and helps qualify us for grant funding. Commissioner Aelion
said as long as our Reserves are not touched, and Mayor Scholl said we are not
compromising anything. Commissioner Aelion asked that the language clearly states that.
Commissioner Aelion moved and Vice Mayor Gatto seconded a motion to approve the
resolution.
