Maximum allowable <br />deviation from standard widths and lengths shall be plus or minus 1/2 in. on width and 5% on <br />length. Broken strips and torn or uneven ends will not be accepted. <br /> <br />E. Strength of Sod Strips: Sod strips shall be strong enough to support their own weight and retain <br />their size and shape if suspended vertically when grasped in the upper 10% of the section. <br /> <br />F. Moisture Content: Sod shall not be harvested or transplanted when moisture content (excessively <br />wet or dry) may adversely affect its survival. <br /> <br />G. Time Limitations: Sod shall be harvested, delivered, and transplanted within a 30 hour period <br />unless a suitable preservation method is approved by the Landscape Architect prior to delivery. <br />Sod not transplanted within this period shall be inspected and approved by the Landscape <br />Architect prior to its installation. <br /> <br />H. Thatch: Sod shall be relatively free of thatch. A maximum of 1/2 in. (uncompressed) thatch will <br />be permitted. <br /> <br />I. Diseases, Nematodes, and Insects: Sod shall be free of disease, nematodes and soil borne insects. <br />State Nursery and Plant Laws require that all sod be inspected and approved for sale. The <br />inspection and approval must be made by the State Agriculture Department, Office of the State <br />Entomologist. <br /> <br />I. Weeds: Sod shall be free of grassy and broadleaf weeds. <br /> <br />2.02 <br /> <br />SOIL MATERIALS: <br />A. Sand: sand shall be a well washed, medium to coarse sand free of silt and sludge. Cyclone sand is <br />not acceptable. <br /> <br />B. Muck: Muck shall be peat material removed from areas marked "Florida Everglades Pear" on Soil <br />Conservation Service Soils Maps. Muck shall be suitable for plant growth, capable of sustaining <br />vigorous plant growth, and specifically pulverized for agricultural use. Florida peat shall be free of <br />deleterious materials that would be harmful to plant growth, shall be free of nematodes, shall be <br />uniform in quality, and shall have a pH of between 5.5 and 6.5 as determined by ASTM E70. <br />Muck shall be sterilized to make it free of all viable nut grasses and other undesirable weeds. <br /> <br />2.03 PLANTING SOIL <br /> <br />: <br />A Planting soil shall be 80% coarse sand and 20% muck. Contractor shall be responsible for <br />spreading the planting soil to the required depths. <br /> <br />B Before sod is installed, test planting soil and amend as recommended by the Testing Laboratory <br />such that planting soil ph falls within the range of 5.5 to 6.5 ph and have an Infiltration Rate (K- <br />sat) of 8-16 inches/hour. <br /> <br />2.04 <br /> <br /> A. Free of substances harmful to plant growth, objectionable odor or staining agents. <br /> <br />WATER: <br />2.05 <br /> <br /> A. The chemical designation for granular fertilizer shall be 12-8-8, with at least 50 <br />percent (50%) of the nitrogen from a non-soluble organic source for all planting. <br /> <br /> B.
