The 85-acre landfill site is owned by Volusia County, Florida, and these two <br /> I recreational areas are under the administration of the county's Parks, Recreation and Culture <br /> Department. These two areas are at opposite corners of the property boundaries, and involve separate <br /> area design, permitting, development, and use. ECT worked jointly with Bellomo-Herbert, a landscape <br /> I architectural firm, and was responsible for all civil and environmental engineering, and associated <br /> permitting through state agencies. <br /> I The 14-acre Barkley Square Dog Park provides <br /> ‘ d ` . , <br /> areas for large and small dogs, as well as for 't -t . '-J ^ fi c ' <br /> training events. This area is heavily wooded and v rcikt, <br /> I contains a small, lined pond within the large dog • , lr • I 4i} w „rzo, <br /> area. Site - <br /> improvements proposed on the surface of the • . <br /> Iclosed landfill area include five soccer fields. <br /> Proposed site improvements in the area adjacent to the closed landfill include a restroom building and <br /> associated septic system, parking areas, relocation and repaving of an existing road bisecting the <br /> Iproject area, and dry retention ponds for stormwater management, all in a wooded area with elevations <br /> ranging from 43 to 67 feet. Challenges included tree preservation, grading of both these wooded sloped <br /> areas and the flat surfaces required for the five soccer fields, and permitting these facilities within a <br /> Iclosed landfill area.
