UNITED STATES BANKRUPTCY COURT
SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF FLORIDA
UNITED STATES COURTHOUSE, ROOM 303
ti .Z. 299 EAST FROWARD BOULEVARD
' FORT LAUDERDALE,FLORIDA 33301
JOHN K.OLSON (954)7693772
WM STATES aAMUUPTCY JUDGE
August 4,2009
Adolfo J.Cotilla,Jr., AIA
President
acai associates, inc.
2937 W.Cypress Creek Road, Suite 200
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309
Dear Adolfo:
1 write to thank you for the extraordinary work which you and your team performed in the design
and construction of my courtroom and chambers in the Fort Lauderdale federal courthouse.
The courthouse was designed and constructed in the late 1970's. The building is architecturally
difficult from many perspectives. From a utilization standpoint, there are concrete and steel structural
columns and ceiling grids which dictate not only space layout but also severely limit the placement of
utilities. Ceiling heights are very low for a courtroom;every other courtroom space in this building(other
than three courtrooms which have two-story ceilings in part of the courtroom) induces feelings of
claustrophobia. I am happy to say that mine does not.
Your team's work in designing and supervising the construction of my courtroom and chambers
solved the peculiar design problems of this building in spectacular fashion. A number of design choices
which you suggested have been adopted by the local GSA construction team as first choice materials for
renovation projects. GSA regularly brings staff from elsewhere to view the space to show what can be done
with a difficult space, and I am routinely told by lawyers from elsewhere that my courtroom is the finest
space in which they have ever practiced.
Your team was a pleasure to work with. I was heavily involved in the project throughout—and I
can't imagine how a project can successfully express the client's point of view if the client doesn't expend
that kind of effort. I found each of your team members to be knowledgeable, attentive, and thoroughly
professional; my experience in the process and with the results could not
be more satisfactory.
I would be glad to show off my space or to discuss my experiences with any potential court client.
Sincerely,
John K.Olson
United States Bankruptcy Judge
