Russo, City Manager
FROM: Susan Simpson, Cultural and Community Services
Director
DATE: 2/18/2016
Memorials to Honor Former Commissioners Lila
RE' Kauffman and Connie Morrow
RECOMMENDATION:
This resolution is presented for your consideration.
REASONS:
The first elected Commission of the City of Sunny Isles Beach in 1997,
the year of incorporation, included two pioneering women, Lila
Kauffman and Connie Morrow. Both women were vocal activists for
progress in what was then a forgotten area of Miami-Dade County. They
saw the beauty and potential of what Sunny Isles Beach could be and
they paved the way for the Sunny Isles Beach of today.
Lila Kauffman served on the Commission from 1997 to 2003. Lila had a
passion for the arts, culture and education. She devoted much of her
time to theaters and seniors and most notably was instrumental in
starting what still exists today as the Cultural Events program. These
trips would often take patrons to Broadway shows and dinner theaters.
Some of her favorite trips were to Fairchild Tropical Garden and the
Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. Lila continued to promote
educational and cultural programs after leaving office and had a keen
eye out for the park across from her home, Senator Gwen Margolis
Park. In her honor, it is recommended to name a botanical garden at the
south end of Senator Gwen Margolis Park as the Commissioner Lila
288
