Kauffman Botanical Garden. The trees and plants in that area will be
named and we will erect a plaque in her honor naming it as such.
Connie Morrow served on the Commission from 1997 to 2001. Connie
was a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. In
addition to her own radio show, she established the Fashion, Film,
Entertainment and Production Council in the City. This committee, under
Connie's direction, exposed the new and improved City of Sunny Isles
Beach to the film production industry by hosting tours of the City. These
'behind the scenes' tours showcased areas of the City that location
scouts rarely noticed and ignited an interest in bringing film productions
to Sunny Isles Beach. Connie was also instrumental in hosting the first
Sunny Isles Beach Talent Show, a ballroom dance competition, and a
fashion show complete with runway and models! But Connie's greatest
passion was her work with children. She established the Sunflower
Society, a non-profit organization that provided access to the arts and
camps to children who could not otherwise participate. Numerous
children were sponsored by the Sunflower Society for summer camp to
provide day care for working parents. Even after her term as
Commissioner ended, Connie could be counted on to be at the
summer camp talent show to cheer on the children's performance and
encourage those children she sponsored. It is recommended that North
Bay Road between 174 Street where Connie lived and 178 Street be
named City Commissioner Connie Morrow Lane. This is the area that
most of the families resided that Connie's programs aided.
Both of these remarkable women have since left us but their legacy in
our City lives on. It is recommended that we honor them for their
service to our community in this way.
FUNDING SOURCE:
Funding for this item is available in the General Fund Parks budget and
collectively will not exceed $4,000.00.
ATTACHMENTS:
Description
Resolution
Item Number: 10.N.
289
