Summary Minutes:Regular City Commission Meeting June 16,2016 City of Sunny Isles Beach,Florida
5B. Presentation/Acknowledgement of the Winner of the"Do The Right Thing"Award Won by
Miya McClelland, a Sixth Grader at Norman S. Edelcup K-8 Community School.
Action: Vice Mayor Jeanette Gatto reported that the "Do The Right Thing" Award
recognizes and rewards Miami youth for their exemplary behavior, accomplishments, and
good deeds, through a unique partnership with the Miami-Dade Police Department,Miami-
Dade School Board, and other Law Enforcement agencies. This Award program
distinguishes exceptional school age children who choose to be drug free, crime free, exhibit
non-violence behavior, do well in school, and make a difference in their community.
Chief Fred Maas said last night at the"Do The Right Thing"Program, from the thousands of
students that are recognized for doing the right thing, the Sunny Isles Beach Norman S.
Edelcup K-8 had an actual winner, and the student was one of only 90 selected from the
multi-thousands that were nominated, and this young lady really did do the right thing. She
reported some very unsafe conditions that some students were engaging in and felt it was her
responsibility to report it, and it was stopped immediately. She really did a tough thing in
today's day and age but she did the right thing and so she was recognized and he asked Miya
McClelland to come forward. He congratulated her and said the City wants to recognize her
as well because we believe our students are very important in that they are the future of this
City, and he presented her with an official Sunny Isles Beach Police Car.
Chief Maas said we had another student who was recognized at least on the City's level and
he is as young as a Kindergartner. However, he could not attend the ceremony and so he
called this young man to come up so we can at least recognize him for what he did as a
Kindergartner doing the right thing and he called up Winston, the son of Jeniffer Viscarra.
Chief Maas said he came in one morning and on his door was a little note that said "Dear
Chief Maas. I like you.", and it had been on his door every day for a week. No matter how
bad it got, every time he went back to his office he had that note from Winston, and this is
one of the reasons that people are recognized for doing the right thing. He said to Winston
"You know what Winston,I like you too." He presented a Congratulations Certificate and a
Police Coin to Winston.
6.
