The Sraward County postponed a vote to create a Committee.
Commission on Tuesday formal Animal Care Advisory The plan to revamp the
/wxlUnty's informal animal care
committee was tirst sug-
gested a little more than a
year ago, but the proposal
resurfaced Ihis summer after
an investigation questioned
the procedures used (or
euthanasia and for selling ani-
mals at the county's Fort Lau~
derdale shelter, 1870 SW 39th
The proposal calls for nine
members who serve specific
roles in animal care, law
enforcement and animal wel-
fare.
The commission will
revisit the proposal in Janu-
remains concerned about
uncertain population esti-
mates, rising boat kills and a
record 416 deaths overall last
year.
"We need to protect these
gentle creatures, and I've
consistently felt that way,"
said Crist, who as a state
senator pushed a bill to man-
Commission Chairman
Rodney Barrelo, a Miami
what six fellow commission-
ers would do.
"He is our leader. I-Ie has
at-risk animals, which envi-
developers,
Activists weren't ready to
celebrate but, with Crist's
message dear, they are sud-
denly hopeful the seacows
will keep an endangered des-
ignation they argue is more
than symbolic.
"What you call them dic-
tates what you can do to pro-
tect them," said Pat Rose,
executive director of the
Save The Manatee Club.
The governor's interven-
tion was a blow for a coali-
tion of marine and develop-
campaigned for six years to
