<br />MRYOR8,CO~~ ~ ~?~ g~.___.__.P____ ._..fCi~ :~Q.~?2~Z9,~,? <br /> <br />Jun 21 '01 <br /> <br />8:24 <br /> <br />P.02 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION 2001-001 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF COASTAL MAYORS OF <br />lVllAMI-DADE COUNTY ADOPTING A LIST OF LEGISLATIVE <br />AND FUNDING PRIORITIES FOR MIAMI-DADE COUNTY <br />BEACH EROSION CONTROL, AND REQUESTING THE MlAMl- <br />D.IDE COUNTY CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO <br />SUPPORT AND IMPLEMENT TO THE GREATEST EXTEl'll <br />POSSmLE THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE ITEMS ON <br />THE LIST OF PRIORITIES. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County's beaches are one of its most valuable natural <br />and economic resources, and is critical to the local quality of life for residents and <br />tourists; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Miami-Dade's beaches provide critical storm protection to billions <br />of dollars worth of coastal development and infrastructure; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County, as Local Sponsor of the federal shore <br />protection project implemented through the Army Corps of Engineers, has worked in <br />cooperation with the coastal milllicipalities to implement a highly successful program of <br />beach renourishment and maintenance over the past thirty years; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the immediate creation and implementation ofa comprehensive <br />beach renourishment and retention program is essential for the safety of coastal <br />communities and for the protection of life and property, and that in addition, such <br />creation and implementation will serve the objectives of efficiently employing public <br />resources and effectively managing critically important local, state, and national interests <br />and as sets; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a consensus of policy and direction has been achieved by the <br />Council of Coastal Mayors of Miami-Dade COilllty, with the input, participation and <br />agreement of representatives of Miami-Dade COilllty including members of the County <br />Commission, Administration, DERM, and Park and Recreation Department. confinning <br />the need for strong support for such a comprehensive renourishment and retention plan <br />from the Miami-Dade County Congressional Delegation in securing the necessary <br />authorizations, actions, and funding necessary to sustain the program; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, immediate and concerted action on the part of federal, state, county, <br />and municipal agencies is necessary and all possible methods of expediting required pre- <br />implementation procedures, in light of the abillldance of studies and data already <br />available, in order to efficiently and effectively produce results that will serve to mitigate <br />long term costs and to provide timely protection from the potential consequences of <br />hurricanes and associated winds, waves, and flooding; and <br /> <br />Exhibit "A" <br />
