FIU BISCAYNE BAY SOCIETY OVERVIEW As indicated, the mission of the Society is to support the many outreach activities sponsored by the various departments within the University and presented at the Biscayne Bay Campus. Many of these events are free, or carry a nominal charge. (In 2004/2005, the University hosted more than 200 adult education/cultural/entertainment events open to the public). As a publicly funded university, part of FIU's mission is to extend its activities to the residents of the local communities. The local municipalities thus have an opportunity to offer their residents a wide range of programming at the University level. These programs could not be duplicated without the vast resources of the University. The project's primary function is to assemble information about these programs and then to set up effective communication between the University Campus and the surrounding residents via: Direct mail newsletter Full Page Miami Herald"Neighbors" E-mail,(pending) Community organizations, Chambers of Commerce Community Centers Condo and rental building bulletin board postings, "2n"Tuesdays at Biscayne Bay Campus!!" As a way to dramatize this project, the FIU Biscayne Bay Society has created this monthly high profile event at the campus. These events consist of an exciting cultural/entertainment presentation once a month on the 2°° Tuesday of each month, from approximately 6-8 PM. The first event will be on October 13, 2005, and will follow each month through April 2006. The evening's entertainment (or educational) event will be supplied from within the resources of the University's Arts and Cultural departments, including: School of Music Art Department, College of Arts& Sciences Creative Writers program School of Hospitality Management College of Education Department of Dance&Theatre Honors College FIU Library System FIU Art Museum Department of Religious Studies Each of these evenings will also contain a"food tasting" component, and an opportunity for local municipalities to display information about their activities.
