<br />MAYORS' GREEN CITY ACTION ACCORD <br /> <br />Whereas, Florida's municipalities recognize the importance of developing and using alternative <br />energies and reducing greenhouse gas emissions; and <br /> <br />Whereas, success in pursuing the goals of alternative energy development and cleaner air will <br />enhance America's energy security, improve our environment and provide Floridians with <br />benefits from the economic activity associated with the new energy technologies; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the State of Florida has recognized the significance of these issues by establishing the <br />Florida Energy Commission as well as the Century Commission for a Sustainable Florida, which <br />has recommended the state make energy security and greenhouse gas reduction a top priority; <br />and <br /> <br />Whereas, Florida Governor Charlie Crist has taken a leadership role in this effort by establishing <br />the Energy Action Team to make recommendations on energy and environmental matters; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the Florida Green Building Coalition, Inc., is an effort committed to the advancement <br />of energy and environmental progress and is supported by diverse groups including the Sierra <br />Club, the Audubon Society, River Watch, the Florida Solar Energy Center, the University of <br />Florida Energy Extension and others; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the Florida Green Building Coalition, Inc., has developed goals and standards for <br />municipalities to pursue in order to promote alternative energies and a cleaner environment, with <br />municipalities that achieve those standards being designated as Florida's "Green Cities"; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the Florida Green City Local Government Standard defines those municipalities <br />meeting the "Green City" designation as those which incorporate multiple environmental, <br />ecological and sustainability features into their municipal functions, which features improve <br />environmental performance beyond the minimum required by state and local environmental <br />regulations; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the Board of Directors of the Florida League of Cities recognizes the Green Cities <br />initiative as a catalyst for assisting municipalities, the state and our nation in achieving goals for <br />energy efficiency and environmental progress; <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE <br />FLORIDA LEAGUE OF CITIES, INe.: <br /> <br />Section 1. That the Board of Directors of the Florida League of Cities commends Governor <br />Charlie Crist and the State of Florida for leadership in advancing alternative energies and a <br />cleaner environment, and commits to working with the Governor's Energy Action Team and the <br />Florida Energy Commission on these important issues, with the objective of providing solutions <br />
