Final backfill may be Class I, II, or III and must be placed and compacted <br />in 12" maximum lifts and compacted to a minimum of 85% standard <br />proctor density to prevent excessive settlement at the surface. <br />2.02 SUBMITTALS <br />A. The Contractor shall furnish the Engineer, for approval, a representative sample <br />of fill material obtained from on -site sources at least ten calendar days prior to <br />the date of anticipated use of such material. <br />B. For each material obtained from other than on -site sources, the Contractor shall <br />notify the Engineer of the source of the material and shall furnish the Engineer, <br />for approval, a representative sample at least ten calendar days prior to the date <br />of anticipated use of such material. <br />PART 3 - EXECUTION <br />3.01 GENERAL <br />A. All excavation, backfill and grading necessary to complete the work shall be <br />made by the Contractor and the cost thereof shall be included in the Contract <br />price. <br />B. Material shall be furnished as required from off site sources and hauled to site. <br />C. The Contractor shall take all necessary precautions to maintain the work area in <br />a safe and workable condition. <br />D. The Contractor shall protect his work at all times by flagging, marking, lighting <br />and barricading. It shall also be the Contractor's responsibility to preserve and <br />protect all above and underground structures, pipelines, conduits, cables, drains, <br />or utilities which are existing at the time he encounters them. Failure of the <br />Drawings to show the existence of these obstructions shall not relieve the <br />Contractor from this responsibility. The cost of repair of damage which occurs to <br />these obstructions during or as a result of construction shall be borne by the <br />Contractor without additional cost to the Owners. <br />3.02 INSPECTION <br />06/07 <br />A. Examine the areas and conditions under which excavating, filling, and grading <br />are to be performed. Do not proceed with the work until unsatisfactory <br />conditions have been corrected. <br />B. Examine and accept existing grade of athletic field, swale, walks, pavements and <br />steps prior to commencement of work and report to Engineer if elevations of <br />existing subgrade substantially vary from elevations shown on the Drawings. - <br />02221 -5 03 -4197 <br />
