BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT AND RELEVANCE TO THIS CONTRACT (Include scope, size, and cost) Hosting the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games ignited a spirit of urban renewal and civic pride in the City of Atlanta that inspired Centennial Olympic Park. The 21-acre park is a legacy to the vision and alliance of the City of Atlanta, the State of Georgia, the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, and the many civic organizations, special interest groups and designers involved. Centennial Olympic Park is designed as a permanent downtown revitalization feature. Thematically, it imprints a landscape "quilt" into the fabric of city streets to convey the cultural heritage of the American South and Atlanta's reputation as the "City of Trees". The pattern of existing city streets is woven into the park plan, creating destination-bound pedestrian promenades. Located at the eastern gateway to the Georgia World Congress CenterlGeorgia Dome complex, the park links convention facilities to the city's lively hotel and market district. Distinctive design features include the five-acre Centennial Plaza with its centerpiece Olympic Ring Fountain, a 500-seat natural amphitheater, a meandering multi-level water basin, eight 65-foot-talllight towers, and more than 500,000 engraved commemorative brick pavers. As prime consultant for the project, EDAW led a 15-firm team, getting the Phase 1, Pre-Olympic job done in only 18 months from design start through construction completion, on schedule for Opening Ceremonies. During the Games, the park served as the city's central festival space, visited by an estimated 5.5 million people. Post-Olympic construction, completed in March 1998, transformed Centennial Olympic Park into Georgia's first urban state park, one of the most important physical legacies of the Games.
