BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT AND RELEVANCE TO THIS CONTRACT (Include scope, size. and cost) EDAW was commissioned to develop a master plan for a 35-acre park in the heart of a residential and retail development in an urban beachfront neighborhood of Barcelona. Working with Robert A.M. Stern Architects and Spanish architect Enric Miralles, EDAW developed a park that is conceived as both a focal point for the new residential towers, but also a pleasant path to the sea for the surrounding neighborhoods. To that end, the park includes active and passive play areas, a major pond, an outdoor cafe, a play fountain and viewing mounds. All of these features are intertwined with a comprehensive set of pedestrian paths -- some soft, some hard -- that sweep throughout the park towards the sea. Rendered in a resolute modernist language, the park is conceived as an abstract tapestry in its plan view. While the plan view for most parks is not legible, at Diagonal Mar, the residents of the high- rise towers will enjoy their park both from above and within. Key ecological considerations informed the park as well. A regional detention pond is part of the program and some 50% of the shoreline is edged with aquatic vegetation to provide first-flush cleansing of stormwater and to provide habitat. Beachfront grasses, perennials and evergreens are proposed in the first block of the park, selected for their ability to withstand the constant saline winds. Deciduous trees are located one block inboard to ensure their survival. Porous pavements are proposed in many areas to minimize stormwater runoff. And, finally, EDAW developed a planting palette including many native plantings to minimize irrigation and pesticide applications. Architects: Robert A.M. Stern Architects and Enric Miralles 25.
