John Szerlag, City Manager
Jorge L. Vera, Assistant City Manager/ Service Divisio~

October 16, 2008 ~

172nd Street Landscape Improvements Modification

1
In September 2008, our landscaping contractor informed the City that the Medjools that were
purchased for the south end of Sunny Isles Boulevard were ready for delivery. However, we
were not ready to receive these trees because of construction delays with the FPL
undergrounding project on Sunny Isles Boulevard. Our options were either to take possession of
the trees at a cost of $5 to $6 thousand dollars per month for storage or to cancel the order and
lose a Fifty Thousand Dollar ($50,000) deposit. We decided to take delivery of the Medjools
and place them along the Collins A venue corridor in front of Epicure restaurant and also along
172nd Street and Town Center Park, again because of the uncertainty of the FPL undergrounding
construction schedule. We felt that this could be a template for other landscaping projects in the
City. Eventually when we are ready for planting, the City will need to replenish the Sunny Isles
Boulevard Medjools at a cost of One Hundred Sixty-One Thousand Two Hundred Dollars
($161,200). Funds are available and can be transferred from the Atlantic Isle Undergrounding
(20-600- 5664)

At the October Agenda Review Workshop, the City Commission requested a copy of the
landscape modifications for 172nd Street. Attached are the illustrations for the proposed
landscape modification. The proposed plantings will be a mix of Medjools and Royal Palms
along 172nd Street. Additionally, we are proposing to increase the ground plantings and to
include a landscape screen element at the parking lots, so the cars that traverse 172nd Street are
hidden from view.

Under the contract we have One Hundred Eight Thousand Dollars ($108,000) for the
landscaping on 172nd Street. We estimate that the landscape modification will cost an additional
One Hundred Thousand Dollars ($100,000). If this modification is approved, it will serve as a

Funding available:

Appro\'al:

\ 0
lOC.
IO-16-0~

Agenda Item No.:

Finance Department

City Manager

Corrurussion Meeting Date:
