Gwen Cherry Park Aquatic Center and Parking Lot <br />New parking was added to serve both existing park facilities as well as the new aquatic play <br />center. An accessible path from this parking, through an existing bathhouse, to the new <br />aquatic play area was provided. Where required by the Health Department, plumbing <br />fixtures were added to meet current code fixture count requirements and upgraded <br />accessible facilities were provided in the existing bathhouse. The existing bathhouse was <br />used as the point of control for both the existing pool facilities as well as the new aquatic <br />play facility. Aquatic filtration equipment was placed on grade to minimize costs. The <br />aquatic play area includes a small area of grass and palms within the fenced area to soften <br />the appearance and to be used as a small picnic area. Large umbrellas were included on the <br />multi-colored deck to provide areas of shade for supervising parents. The University of <br />Miami Recreation and Wellness Center is located at the main campus in Coral Gables and is <br />the only facility of this type south of New Orleans. This unique 100,000 S.F. facility includes <br />squash and racquetball courts, swimming pool, elevated running track, gymnasium, four <br />indoor basketball courts and a state of the art weight room.
