Its purpose is to promote the conservation and protection of the City's natural resources.
This section presents planning time frames of five and ten years in accordance with Rule 9J-
5.005(4) F.A.C.

..

-

-

III Natural Resources Inventory

..

This section of the Plan includes information of the City's natural resources in accordance with Rille
9J -5.013( 1)( a).

-

-

..

Surface Water Bodies

..

The City's boundaries include portions of both the Intracoastal Waterway and the Adantic Ocean.
The widest part of the Intracoastal Waterway forms Dmnfounding Bay located between the City of
Sunny Isles Beach and the City of Aventura. Sunny Isles Beach also contains a number of finger
canals emanating from the Intracoastal Waterway. The waterfront land is heavily developed and
only limited natural vegetation remains.

-

-

-

-

-

Wetlands

-

Wedands are defmed as areas that are poorly drained due to the fact that the water table is near or
above the soil's surface for all or part of the year. However, according to County requirements, any newly
identified wedands within the City will be protected.

-

-

-

-

Groundwater

-

The City's drinking water is supplied from the Biscayne Aquifer. The aquifer serves as a regional
water source through North Miami Beach's Norwood-OdHer Wellfidd. The County monitors and
protects the wdlfidds.

-

..

..

Air Quality

-

-

Miami-Dade County maintains fourteen air quality monitoring stations. There are no monitoring
stations within the City of Sunny Isles Beach. Since 1989 there has been one ozone exceeding
incident within the County and three instances where total suspended particulates exceeded the
allowable limits. All of these cases took place in the western portion of the County and did not affect
the City.

-

..

....

32

-

Sunny Isles Comprehensive Plan - E.xisting Conditions I Background Documents

-
