The design team <br />proposed a complete renovation of the structure including <br />a new main fa9ade highlighted by an imposing portico. The <br />interior is marked by a new atrium cut out of the existing roof <br />which floods the library with natural light. The reading room, <br />computer terminals, young adult, children's, new books, <br />and audio visuals areas all surround the atrium. A central <br />circulation spine characterized by a vaulted, metallic ceiling <br />connects the front entry/cafe with the circulation desk and the <br />reference desk. The library has a books and material capacity <br />of 176,000 items and integrates extensive computer facilities <br />including 65 public access terminals and a computer lab with <br />eighteen workstations. <br /> <br />The design incorporated sustainable design principles into the <br />project. These included the reuse of the existing building, the <br />incorporation of extensive natural light through the atrium and <br />new windows on all facades, the reduction in paved asphalt <br />area, and the creation of a new greenways park along the <br />canal on two sides of the project. <br /> <br />Project Cost: $7 million <br /> <br /> <br />i- <br /> <br />25.
