i7 a
• 3,786 -acre park containing a unique
blend of ecological, historic, and
cultural resources
• Approximately 1.5 million visitors per
year
• Master plan to enhance recreational,
educational, and interpretive
opportunities within the park, while
protecting the fragile environment
• Plan includes multi -use and hiking
trails, a series of interpretive
experiences for public education, and
designated areas of the park for
environmental restoration and
protection
• Involved public participation and
consensus
• Developed vision for park
• Site assessment using Geographic
Information Systems (GIS)
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Cape Henlopen State Park
Cape Henlopen, Delaware
Client: Delaware Department of Natural Resources - Division of Parks
and Recreation
Cape Henlopen State Park, developed as part of the U.S. coastal defense system
during World War II, has numerous buildings, batteries, and towers built as part
of the military installation. These structures are located in a dynamic coastal
environment with unique Pitch Pine forests, dunes, and wetlands covering most
of the park. Today, the park is also one of Delaware's most popular beach
destinations and this popularity threatens to overwhelm the natural and cultural
resources that make the park so special. The challenge of the plan was to (1)
develop a common vision for the future of the park between a Steering
Committee composed of community members and DNREC, and (2) create
more diverse opportunities within the park while limiting the pressures of
increased visitation.
EDAW INC DESIGN, PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENTS WORLDWIDE
