PROJECT EXPERIENCE <br />• Downtown revitalization <br />• Successful public - private partnership <br />• Honor Award, American Society of <br />Landscape Architects, Potomac <br />Chapter <br />Atlantic Avenue Streetscape Improvements + Connector Parks <br />Virginia Beach, Virginia <br />Client: City of Virginia Beach <br />Motivated by economic and aesthetic factors, the City of Virginia Beach <br />sponsored a resort area improvement program to invigorate Atlantic Avenue, <br />the main street - and commercial heart and soul - of this popular beach <br />destination. A tourist mecca, Atlantic Avenue is lined on the east side by <br />oceanfront hotels and on the west by a mix of retail shops and restaurants. <br />New streetscape design, utility relocation and burial, and a series of connector <br />parks were key transformational elements. Thematically, each park focuses on <br />a different aspect of beach and resort life. Functionally, the parks form safe, <br />attractive links at cross streets to handle foot traffic between Atlantic Avenue <br />and the boardwalk. <br />Collaboration between the city and local merchants during every phase of the <br />project transformed a concept into a viable civic achievement. <br />EDAW INC DESIGN, PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENTS WORLDWIDE <br />
