Calvin, Giordano & Associates, 1r) .
SR-5 HIGHWAY BEAUTIFICATION
ir"MRAINT
IProject
This project consisted of highway beautification for the SR -5 (US1) road right -of -ways in
Marathon. The project extends to the east at Grassy Key (MM60) and just to the western limit
of Tom's Harbor Bridge, the City's entry point traveling towards Key West. The other location
is west of Knights Key (MM47), just to the eastern limit of the Seven Mile Bridge, the City's
entry point traveling towards Miami. SR -5 is the only roadway linking the Florida Keys to the
mainland. This is the most prominent roadway in Monroe County and follows the original
route of the Flagler Railroad. The historic aspect of this project was a significant component
of its design development. Incorporating historic railroad structures at these entry points
intended to highlight the Flagler Railroad's importance in the growth and development of
Marathon. With the extension of the Heritage Trail along this route, visitors can share in the
history of Marathon.
Client
City of Marathon
Contact information
at time of project:
Mayor
11090 Overseas Highway
Marathon, FL 33050
Project Date
2000 -2001
Amount of Grant
$200,000
Services Provided
Grant application, landscape
design, and highway
beautification
Key Personnel
Tammy Cook, RLA, ASLA
