1 <br />t <br />PART 2 - PRODUCTS <br />2.01 MATERIALS <br />A. General: <br />1. Materials for use as base fill and backfill shall be as described <br />below. <br />a. Satisfactory soil materials are defined as those complying <br />with American Association of State Highway and <br />Transportation Officials ( AASHTO) M -145, soil classification <br />Groups A -1, A -2 -4, A -2 -5 and A -3. <br />b. Unsatisfactory soil materials are those defined in AASHTO <br />M -145 soil classification Groups A -2 -6, A -2 -7, A -4, A -5, A -6 <br />and A -7 along with peat and other highly organic soils. <br />2. Materials shall be furnished as required from off site sources and <br />hauled to the site. <br />B. Structural Fill: <br />1. Structural fill material shall be satisfactory soil material consisting of <br />a minimum of 60 percent clean medium to fine grain sized quartz <br />sand, free of organic, deleterious and compressible material. Rock <br />in excess of 2 -1/2 inches in diameter shall not be used in the fill <br />material. Structural fill shall not contain hardpan, stones, rocks, <br />cobbles or other similar materials. <br />C. Crusher -Run Gravel: <br />1. The impervious aggregate base, crusher -on gravel, subbase or <br />shoulder course material shall be of uniform quality throughout. <br />The material retained on the No. 10 sieve shall be composed of <br />aggregate meeting the requirements for Class A or B coarse <br />aggregate, except the percent of soft fragments allowed shall be as <br />shown in the requirements below. To be used only if requested by <br />Contractor and approved by the Engineer. <br />2. The impervious aggregate may be produced from an approved <br />quarry source, or bank or pit deposit, which will yield a satisfactory <br />mixture conforming to all requirements of these specifications after <br />it has been crushed or processed as a part of the mining <br />operations, or the material may be furnished in two sizes of such <br />gradation that when combined in the central mix plant the resultant <br />mixture shall conform to the required specifications.
