iSECTION 01721 <br />DISINFECTION AND BACTERIOLOGICAL TESTING <br />i <br />PART 1 - GENERAL <br />1.01 WORK INCLUDED <br />A. This section covers the work necessary to disinfect the raw water and <br />potable water facilities installed by this project, and all requirements for <br />bacterial testing of the facilities, and obtaining subsequent clearances for <br />operation issued by the Owner and all state /local health agencies having <br />jurisdiction over the facility as may be applicable. <br />B. Any methods specified herein are given as examples for discussion <br />purposes. The constraining requirements are ultimate passage of bacterial <br />' tests, protection of materials, health, and the environment, and <br />conservation of water. The Contractor shall submit, in accordance with the <br />specified shop drawing procedure, a procedure plan for disinfection and <br />testing for achieving the requirements specified herein. <br />PART 2 - PRODUCTS <br />2.01 GENERAL <br />1 A. The Contractor shall furnish all labor, chemicals, and equipment necessary <br />for completing the disinfection process in conformance with AWWA C651, <br />latest edition. The use of chlorine solutions is anticipated as the active <br />i disinfecting agent. The Contractor shall be solely responsible for the safe <br />and proper handling of the chlorine compounds or other hazardous <br />chemicals utilized. Only chlorine from a sodium hypochlorite solution or a <br />gas -to- solution injector will be allowed. The use of calcium hypochlorite will <br />not be allowed. Direct injection of chlorine gas is prohibited. Sodium <br />hypochlorite solutions must be premixed and fed to tanks or piping and not <br />iplaced dry. <br />PART 3 - EXECUTION <br />3.01 GENERAL <br />A. All components of this project which will contain, transport or otherwise <br />contact the raw, aerated, softened, filtered, finished, and potable water shall <br />be disinfected and bacteriologically cleared. The Contractor is responsible <br />for performing all functions for disinfection. Initial tests for bacteriological <br />clearance will be performed by the Engineer and Owner.
