I
L
i
r;
it
tests shall be considered the responsibility of the Contractor, and
reapplication of disinfectants and retesting shall be at the Contractor's sole
expense.
B. Prior to application of disinfectants, the tanks, equipment or pipelines shall
be thoroughly cleansed of loose and suspended material. Pipelines shall
be flushed until clear of suspended solids and color. The Contractor is
expected to exercise caution in construction of the facilities to minimize
retention of debris and subsequent excessive flushing requirements. The
Contractor shall ensure that the water he utilizes is suitable for flushing and
disinfecting the facilities.
C. Disinfection operations shall not be commenced until all hydrostatic testing,
pressure testing, functional and operational testing for the associated
structures, piping, and pumping system have been completed satisfactorily.
D. The following methods are normally adequate for disinfection and are
generally acceptable:
1. Pipelines:
a. See Section 02600 - Yard Piping.
b. Pipelines to be disinfected include all piping downstream of
the well pumps except drain piping.
2. Tanks and Water Holding Structures:
a. Tanks shall be disinfected by one of the following methods:
1) A solution containing 200 ppm of available chlorine
shall be sprayed or brushed onto the interior surfaces
of the tank and allowed to remain 3 hours or until dry
before being rinsed off. A solution containing 200 ppm
of available chlorine can be prepared by diluting a 1
percent sodium hypochlorite solution to 50 parts of
water.
2) The tank shall be filled with water containing 50 ppm of
available chlorine. This solution should be held in the
tank for at least 3 hours before being replaced with
fresh water.
3) The tank shall be filled with chlorinated water sufficient
to produce a chlorine residual of 5 ppm after a
retention period of 24 hours. In most instances, an
initial application of 25 ppm should produce a chlorine
residual of 5 ppm after 24 hours. After 24 hours, the
chlorinated water should be drained and the tank filled
with raw well water.
b. Disposal of chlorinated water shall be in accordance with all
applicable regulations.
3. Pumps and Other Equipment:
a.
