.

.

.

,~. North Bay Road Pedestrian/Emergency Vehicle Bridge and Town Center Observation Deck & Boardwalk
"U',

2. PEDESTRIAN / EMERGENCY VEHICLE BRIDGE

2.1.

PROJECT ISSUES FOIl. BRIDGE

The current geometric environment of the project offers several challenges lI'om a bridge development
perspective that has to be addressed carefully in a methodical process.

. Variable Horizontal Geometry
. Vertical Clearance (Low Prolile/at grade)
. Ease of construction
. No right of way acquisition.

2.].]. Span Configuration

The first challenge is the span configuration. From our observation, the perpendicular channel
width at the proposed crossing is approximately one hundred feet. Close attention to the travel
way alignment requirements yield a skewed span arrangement of approximately 30 to 40 degrees.
This of course increases the span length to approximately one hundred thirty feet. As the span gets
longer the span depth requirements get deeper. Given that the requirements are that this bridge
crossing be at grade: as a result, it stands to reason that the alignment requirements will have an
affect on vertical clearance. Understanding that the approaches to the bridges are set by right of
way and travel way constraints, two options here considered for the span arrangement:

. Multiple Spans
· Single Span

Multiple Span Conti2;uration
The following are the benelits of a Multispan configuration:

· Would result in the most economical short term cost solution.
· Ease of construction.

Multi Span would have the following disadvantages:

· Introduction of structures into water
· Multi-span bridge represents multiple joints; as a result adds to maintenance cost.

Sin2;le Span Confi2;uration
A single span configuration offers several opportunities for this site. Mainly:

· Improved Aesthetic.

· Increased Safety (No obstructions to the channel for recreational users)

Request for Qualifications No. 07-03-01
